Parking vans at home

  • How can someone parking their vehicles on their property affect your quality of life? Are you mentally ill? Try getting a hobby or going out more so you do not spend all your time thinking of this. You really are one sad individual.

At this time of year why haven't you already drawn your curtains by 8p.m.? Could it be that you are watching out for the return of the vans? Could it be you have nothing else to do? Oooooohhhhh vans, they're scary!!!!
  • If the guy across from the op is parking the vans on his drive way fine , if they are all registered to his house as personal vehicles then he has a right like everyone else.If they are business from home vehicles , that employees drive , then councils would have to be involved , I doubt that using a home as a business includes having 4 vans parked there.Councils licence businesses from home and are assumed as being sole businesses with perhaps the viability for one van.

I can see where the op is coming from , and their probably on the tip of an iceberg.Operating exactly what kind of business? If they are using hazardous chemicals in your street with the chance of fatal gases or explosions , would you be worried? However if its the matter of plain asthetics of thier own eyes then move to the countryside , if they cant change the world then change themselves. If they are reversing out a big van and knock down your kids , then would you be more simpathetic to the op?

Sometimes you get a neighbour in a street that is little hitler for their own reasons masquerading as the good guy , I have one , and no doubt another thinks the same of me when i told him not to park on my driveway exit.

For all you that say get a life , I hope you get a cash in hand nechanic in your street or a !!!!! builder....then watch the values go down , and your sanity.

I went and viewed an executive house recently built , price 400k.I didnt buy it because of something similar ,but it wasnt work vans. The houses had double garages , only used for storage. The driveways were full , and there was cars astride the pavements blocking them for pedestrians. The whole point for me in buying a home like it was to get away from free for alls for parking , and having a neighbourhood that looked better than a glorified upmarket council estate. The design of the estate was to free up the road from parked cars lining the street , is six private parking spaces not enough for 5 bedroom houses these days?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
  • sounds like he would be a useful guy to help you move house!

As others have said, if it's a new development there may well be a restrictive covenant that prohibits the parking of commercial vehicles, caravans and trailers and oversize vehicles. Contact the estate management and see what they say - ours has had 'illegally parked' lorries and caravans towed away from our estate before.
  • I think you need planning permission to run a business from home. You need permission for storing tools (van) and materials. You could contact the planning department of your local council to clarify. They do have "anonymity" clauses to allow you to report without getting your name known under data protection act requests.

One van isn't a problem. Two vans could reasonably be run by a family business but three/four vans start to indicate a business. If you notice people turning up to then drive the vans off then they I think you're on reasonable ground for a complaint. perhaps they are even employing people and running the house as staff accommodation.

Ignore the MYOB brigade. If it affects you then you have a right to complain.

I'd keep a diary of what's happening, how it affects you.
Make a complaint when you have details of a pattern.

i.e. over the last four weeks. Three men arrive early and drive the vans off. The vans return late and the drivers leave the house and do not live there. One driver lives at the house.

If its a business and they should have a yard and pay rates like any other business. By not paying rates the rest of you have to cover them and also put up with the inconvenience.

I'd back off from trying to let the owner know you are unhappy. Let the authorities do what you pay them for and enforce the law.

As the capita_guy complains he probably has a van provided under a local/central government contract and is paid from the public purse. Its probably a sore point for him. I'm just guessing.
  • Now you just sum up the nosy neighbours of this world. You would be moaning if these people were scrounging off the state, but even them working annoys you.
For your information I have NO van or car associated with my work at my address. I have neighbours who work and have vehicles parked on their drive and in the road. I do not care because I unlike some sad people here have a life other than watching what my neighbours do.
  • I have checked the covenants regarding the development. it's seams that the parking issue regards all types of commercial vehicles including caravans, if i was to complain i am sure they would require the council to make all the other people with caravans and vans remove them, this would make me public enemy no1. I have also had a note left on my window screen asking me not to park where i do as there is some allocated parking to the side of my house and i am causing and obstruction, i am only parking here as to make a point, my house has a garage and carport but the carport is very narrow and it makes it difficult to open the door to get out my husbands car is also to large to fit in. I am going to make a complaint to the council and ask them to come and view what i have to see in the evening and weekends. or can anyone give me some idea how to approach the issue with the people with out causing an offence.
