I have had pc's with windows ME and XP on now I have Vista and my sons desktop and my laptop, I would not go back to XP whats so ever.
you can sign up to a monthly magazine if your not that sure about Vista,
the official Windows Vista Magazine.
http://www.windowsvistamagazine.com/UK/home.aspx
and get it delivered to your door, that way you don't miss a copy.
and you can get it cheaper.
comes with a handy booklet and dvd every month and you can choose a free gift.

last months gift offer was Video Lab 10 worth £24.99 but thats gone now.
you could wait until January to see which offer is on or pay less each month for the mag without a free gift.
but the mag is invaluable

Just wanted to say thanks for the magazine.com link above. I don't think I need a regular Vista tip session so I wont subscribe, but I've read a few things on the site which I didn't know so that was helpful.
I agree with the comment above in reply to my last post about HP btw although in their defence, they are like most other companies who stop support for their hardware after x amount of years. I think there are few (if any??) companies who will offer continuously never ending support for all their products so it's unsurprising the advent of each new os brings some headaches for the end user, therefore affecting it's 'likeability' factor. Not actually the fault of the os though, I agree.Herman - MP for all!

You do and I do but then again, we have a clue. You're forgetting that Windows has to be built down to noddy level so everyone can use it.

Hey Conor, not sure I like being called a Noddy....but perhaps I am a bit of one. My 15 yr old grandson sorted out the size of the font. I had realised that if it could be done on XP it must surely be possible on Vista.
I was all for sending this Sony laptop back to John Lewis but they all said Oh No. My SinL came round and tried to sort out the router I had had for a while in anticipation of this laptop but it turns out that my Dell PC has no ethernet port. Is that unusual? It is about seven years old. He says he can get round it with some sort of adaptor and, also, they are buying me a mouse for the laptop to put in my Christmas goody-bag. Well I did just buy 17 yr old grandson No.1 a car.0 -

Wow, you're one generous/rich gran. Noone's ever given me anything like that (in fact I've never owned a car at the age of 28)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Do you want to be my gran as well, Jake'sGran?

No one has given a single good reason why anyone should use Vista as opposed to XP. For those who's say go and try Vista, I say go and try rolling back to XP and see what you've been missing in terms of speed and reliability.
If Vista was so good then why non of the millions of businesses are using it and why is Microsoft themselves ditching it so soon after its release???Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

After 18 months of the release of XP millions of businesses weren't using that either. There's always a huge lag, we have a mixture of Vista and XP machines in our company and we're developers. From a business point of view the synergy between Server 2008 and Vista pcs in an LAN is far better and smoother than previous versions. As for MS ditching Vista that's just pure nonsense and shows the stagnant thinking people have got into with XP which was an exception rather than a rule in terms of lifespan. Even assuming an optimistic early release for Windows 7, that's still only the mean average in time between Windows releases and that's excluding business only and server Windows versions."She is quite the oddball. Absolutely agree about the LAN benefits of Vista; our company here also find the network running really smoothly; have to say - it's new kit with Vista installed, no upgrades from xp to Vista (that is what causes problems sometimes, admittedly):)BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

I used to feel the same way as others in this thread, XP was, and is, fast and reliable, an old friend. Vista came along with its big rescourse demands, diabolical driver support and a plethora of other problems, why would anybody bother 'upgrading' I thought.
Then SP1 came out and I got a new machine, a bit of research (google w00t) and I discovered that vista had changed, it was now fixed, and the 64bit version actually worked properly...with driver support, so I gave it a go, and liked it, and put it on my old machine (for daughter to play with) and my new, new machine (for the boys to play with) but left it off the 1ghz, 1gb ram lappy (that wifey plays with).Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
SP2 BETA is even better. It's worth a test drive. You can download it from the Customer Preview Programme at Microsoft. Been running it about a month now with no issues.0
