I sent my custom PC back last week and I'm blaming Vista. Soo slow. Games took ages in install, some wouldn't even uninstall, accessing dvd content was a joke. Cutting down on all those crappy services you don't need made absoulutely no difference. Maybe it just doesn't run well on 8Gb of DDR?

I'm still on the lookout for a decent gaming rig, but it won't come with Vista.

Sorry but you're talking bollox or the company you bought it from haven't a clue how to set up a computer. I have a THREE YEAR OLD DESKTOP that proves you wrong. Hell, even my laptop does.

My current desktop PC which is running Vista Ultimate SP1 handles everything I can throw at it at my monitors native res, with the exception of Crysis, and everything set to highest and it's an old Socket 939 with 2GB RAM.
    Spec:
    Abit An8 Socket 939 nForce 4 motherboard.
    Athlon X2 4800+
    2GB PC3200 DDR Ram
    nVidia 512MB 9600GT

    Counterstrike Source Video Stress Test:

So what is it, you or the company don't know how to set up a computer or you're just talking bollox?

Hi Once the Sony is up and running have a couple of DVD's handy and create the restore discs before you do anything else. Then run decapifier to remove unwanted trial software, ie Norton 360 and Microsoft Office

Wow, I had missed all these responses. Wouldn't you think they would have a put a blank disc in the box to enable new users to do that straight away? What on earth is decapifier? that really is a new word to me. There is a lot of trial software including McAfee which I don't particularly want but I have registered with them thinking that I can get rid when I am properly sorted. Was I wrong? All I have done today is find my way around the screen and decide that the writing is too small (have written to Sony but it's possible that I can improve that on the laptop itself.)

Decrapifier is an application you can download off the internet that is used to uninstall all the pre-installed junk and trials that typically come with a new PC.

To adjust the size of the text...

Right click anywhere on the desktop background and select "Personalize". In the new window that opens, on the very left in the bluey shaded bit is "Adjust font size (DPI). Select that, click OK on the prompt that comes up then either select the 120 or click on the custom button at the bottom and put in a value between 96 and 120 if the 120 appears too large. Click Apply, OK and then you may need to restart the PC for the changes to take effect.

1st thing I do on my machine (vista64) is turn off UAC, I do this because I believe that I do know what I'm doing, and if I break anything, I can fix it again.
With UAC off I can do anything I could do with it on, expect without the warning boxes, so vista does still work.
Rancid-a. Well done that company for selling you a duff pc with 8gb of ram, I find 4 is plenty for me, and the general consensus amongst power users and overclockers is that the extra 4 Gb acts mainly as an e-peen extension, rather than a performance enhancement, though it does make a minimal improvement in some situations.
Games taking ages to install..oh...I wonder why...?? Wouldn't have anything to do with modern games being 5-10Gb installs, would it?
I have an old athlonxp, a e5200 + a q9300 all running vista happily, it took me a long time to change (I waited for SP1) but I wouldn't go back to XP (which I still have on wifey's 1Ghz lappy)...
    Oh...and I game :)

The idea of UAC is to warn it when things are trying to do things without you knowing. It's not the stuff you're deliberately installing that's the issue.

Norton released a good tool that allows you to apply an "always allow" rule to UAC for applications whilst leaving UAC turned on.

Rancid-a is either talking rubbish or has been well and truly ripped off with that PC if he's telling the truth.
  • true enough, Conor, but I quickly tired of vista asking me if I'm sure I want to install AV software, drivers etc..., the big stuff that has to happen immediately after an o/s install, i know the provenance of my software and I have confidence

HP printer and HP scanner - very limited to what it can do now and cant use the quick buttons

Sony camcorder - Doesnt work at all

Isis/Ares Engineering software - Doesnt work at all

I had pretty much the same issues and got rid of Vista on two of my pc's and a laptop - upgraded to XP and all the problem software is once more useable.

You do and I do but then again, we have a clue. You're forgetting that Windows has to be built down to noddy level so everyone can use it. ;)

Oh how my ribs are aching from all the laughter from your witty retort.

Thanks for proving you're too clueless to go find drivers and updates, though.

ISIS and ARES software DOES work under Vista although, like Cadlinks Signlab that one of my customers uses, the parallel port dongles aren't well supported so you have to go get a USB one from them which is.
