VISTA, are the differences big ones?.

I've done it at last, actually bought a laptop. It will arrive tomorrow. I went for one of the Sony ones and it has Vista which on an earlier thread I was told I would soon get used to. Is this true?

What is it about Vista that is different? Does it still use windows? Any tips and pieces of information will be gratefully received.

  • Vista is fairly straight forward and does what Windows XP does - the difference is mainly that the odd function is called something else.

    Don't worry about it - have a look here - http://www.vista4beginners.com/

It depends on what you've been using up to now.

If you're familiar with Windows XP then moving to Vista's not too big a leap at all.

Yes, I have got XP on this machine so I will not worry about it now. I do have a feeling that the Sony computer will have a lot of things on it that I will never use but I bought it because of their excellent reputation. I imagine a lot of people have programs on their machines that they never use.

TBH I hated Vista at first, mainly though the more detailed use of it when setting things up, but I think that was because I was switched backwards and forwards from XP on my desktop to Vista on my laptop, Due to death of desktop now have Vista on both and manage fine.

Do a clean install when you get it before you start doing anything on it, you'll be much better off for it.

Such as? There's nothing I have that doesn't work and some of that software is half a decade old.
  • Some of the changes are a right windup like the must be an administrator box that pops up when ever you try to do anything. You can disable it but then it blankly refuses to let you do anything.

Other things are just awkward to find, it's a bit like buying a car and you discover that they have redesigned it and now the hand brake is in the boot. You get used to it.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Sony camcorder - Doesnt work at all

Isis/Ares Engineering software - Doesnt work at all
  • I have a HP all-in-one and it works fine with the latest software... my Sony camcorder also works...

When was the last time you updated your drivers?
