I had to go to M&S yesterday. It was absolute chaos. You'd think Armageddon was upon us the way some people act in shops when there's a sale on lol.

Can you be a self-employed till operator?

It is a depressing time for many and while not wishing to be overly pessimistic I don't think everyone that is good at what they do will be able to walk into another job immediately. Losing your job is a big blow to anyone and as I said in a previous post I really do hope someone manages some sort of rescue to keep these shops going in some form or other

If you are a till operator at woolies, does that mean it's your vocation and you have to continue down that path?
    erm, no it doesn't.
my mum was a till operator at woolworths over 45 years ago, she left there about 40 years ago - retrained and became a primary school teacher, and in turn head teacher. sarcasm isn't very good. stebiz made a good point. there are jobs out there for people that want them. not necessarily what you are used to doing, but there are jobs there.

I think I agree - I have friends who work for the parent company waiting to hear news as we speak/type - I'm sure they would not resent people trying to bag a bargain during this worrying time.

Be nice everyone - allot of us face uncertainty in the current climate (Me included) and the best we can do is get along and try and save afew quid.
Me too, Dicatflip was right to be offended and rightly points out that
"...In essence we are all "vultures" looking for bargains, not just at Woolworths, but anywhere we can."

Anyone not comfortable with what you perceive as "vulture" type behaviour - why try & be a MSE or trawl the Grabbit thread at all?

We are all very sorry for Woolworths & their staff, they are having a sale and WANT people to but their stock. It will help them keep trading a bit longer and keep staff in jobs in the short term. They have hired extra staff for this event, I believe. This thread is simply shoppers sharing information; we may get a bargain and Woolworths gets some business. No problem there as far as I can see.

Maybe not but it may be a catalyst for those who work on the tills to get a better paid job elsewhere. Many of these till jobs pay very low wages and although Christmas is an waful time to lose your job - it isn't the end of the world. If you are good at your job, aren't work shy and are polite, you will end up with another job very quickly. Good luck to all those who do lose their jobs.

Went to woolies this mornng, lots of people waiting outside before the doors opened. Got a few bargains but lets face it there wasnt much that was actually 50% off. most things were 20 or 30 % still 'worth it' though.
    lol
I can only please one person a day.... Today is not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look good either!!
very greatful for almost everything i read on MSE (except for the nasties!)

 I am sorry but I find this post rather offensive. I haven't been a member of this forum very long, but everyone I have dealt with on here have been lovely kind people. In essence we are all "vultures" looking for bargains, not just at Woolworths, but anywhere we can. I think this is totally unneccesary and totally uncalled for.

My son works there and I am totally fed up with the post that are hoping for the stores to close down so they can get a bargain. Norrow minded and uncaring.
Nothing makes more cross than paying more than you

Thanks to all that have posted this morning, I was going to head down at 9am and DH reminded me that not going there would save me more money. :rotfl: I dont feel I have missed anything thanks to the people who have posted.
  • So if Woolies are bought and jobs are saved...make sure you moan at the staff for things being out of stock, tell them that you demand to see the manager as you have waited 5 mins in the queue, and tell the saturday boy he is lazy slob....
Hmmmm, no I don't think so too!!!!
Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid doing altogether.:D

What a con, there were very few things with 50% off in my store, most things were 10 or 20 %, everyone was conplaining to the manager, who I felt a bit sorry for. School uniform was 50% and a few christmas bits, all consoles and electricals were 10%, cothes 20% and most other stuff 20%

I think calling bargain hunters VULTURES is very insulting!! We are all on this site for the same reason and believe me if this was Boots and people were saying tomorrow I have heard their is going to be 50% off we would all be the same in that thread as we would be in thread. It is a bargain we are all after whether it be Woolies or boots.

I think it is fair to say that most of us love woolies maybe not even because of what it sells but because it has been around for the time that we all have and has been apart of our lives at some point.

You really need to word that differently as I said above we are all here looking for a bargain and thats that!!!

Also many people are in the same situation as Woolies staff as they are losing jobs left right and centre and not sure if they are going to get the next pay packet so believe me these people can do with as many bargains as they can find!!!

    Rant over!!!

    my point exactly.

shop staff need to be treated with more respect full stop. not just because their jobs are under threat
