Excuse me if I am peeing on anybodies parade here but...

Whilst you are all greedilly falling over each other 'woohooing' and 'whooping' down the aisles in Woolies please spare a thought for many of the staff perhaps losing their jobs who face an uncertain future, particularly at this time of year.

Just before the starting gun is fired and you all leap from the blocks can I respectfully remind you all to spare a thought for the staff and treat them accordingly. Do not be rude if your 'bargain' has sold out.

    Merry Christmas.

    Ok, back from Woolies.

Overall, disapointed. There is only any real bargains in the toy aisle, which I suppose is good if you're a parent. I can confirm the list already posted:

    50% off all:
    Gifting
    Schoolware
    Greetings Cards
    Posters

    30% off all:
    Events (Halloween, Party, Party Wrap)
    All X-mas
    Gardening
    Calenders
    Books

    20% off all:
Electrical Items (TVs, DVD Players, General Electrical bits n bobs)
    All Clothing
    Stationary
Home Essentials (kitchen, bathroom, tableware, home adornment)
    All Toys
    Comms

    10% off all:
    All Confectionary
    Computer Games
    DVDs
    CDs
    Consoles

There are some toys which look to be good value. The 'gifting' section, basically all their tatty rubbish like pink garden tools, as well as some nicer looking items like grow-your-own crocuses with vases, all look to be 50% off, which is great if you're over 50 or buying for that age group :P. Seriously, there looks to be some odd gifts, Jack Daniels glasses/cards set half price, couple of electrical gift items too.

Chaps, there is 10% off all video games, cds, dvds ect; which simply brings the woolworths prices a little closer to the low prices available on the internet. Games consoles have 10% off as well, but their bundles/stand alone consoles are no where near the value available elsewhere. I also spotted a few iPod accessories (cables, skins ect) that were decent value, iSound headphone/red&white componant down to £1.50. A number of the big names (wii fit, shawn white snowboarding, guitar hero, a few other recent items) were out of stock, and have been for some time. Their 'cheap chart' dvd rack was well stocked with the usual array of watchable films, good alternative for renting or stocking fillers I suppose.

If you're desperate for those branded toys (star wars, wall-e, pirates, barbie) then you will find 10-20% knocked off the price. Not being a toy expert I can't say whether that is good value or not?

All in all, it sort of sums woolies up nicely. Looks to be good value on the outside, but get in to the nitty gritty, and there's cheaper and better quality alternatives. Suffice to say, I spent a good 15 minutes walking round it (its only a local) and bought nothing.
    Super geek.

They may yet be saved that fate if a buyer can be found, but will indeed be sparing a thought for them, it's always tough to lose your job let alone at this time of year.

Gazfaz I appreciate your point but please also bear in mind that lots of us are facing a bleak time just now and facing redundancy (myself included).

Therefore if I am able to purchase gifts for family at a reduced price I will do so - I certainly don't think I am behaving "greedily",

I'm always polite to shop staff. I used to work in retail myself and that's enough to sour anyone on the topic of customers and the way some of them think they can talk to shop staff.

On the plus point though, helping them clear out the old stock, Christmas tat and otherwise worth-very-little stock in return for some hard cash in the tills might just help the management pay the wages bill this week, so I'm not feeling too bad about going in for some cheapo craft kits. I'm not expecting to get a half-price X-box out of this!

Very useful post. Was thinking of walking up town to take a look. Will now wait until I'm in the area of a larger one tomorrow. Seems like its not worth my while to make a special trip today.

I already have all the bits I desperately want, so its the extra bargains I'm looking for....sounds like I won't find them. Looks like they've just ramped up the vouchers a touch from a week or so ago. Things will slowly get cheaper if they end up having to close stores (hopefully not).

Oh...and yes I like a bargain, but like many others here I'd prefer to keep my woolworths in my high street. There are many towns across the country whose highstreets will be decimated if their woolworths closes. Its a great one stop shop for many people who can't go elsewhere.

I do feel for the staff and find it a shame that they know essentially what we do. Please do not assume that we all have greedy looks on our faces rubbing our hands with glee because there are many here that don't.
