Beware: AVG stopped me from starting my computer.
I recently had a nasty dose of spyware, but cleaned my computer with the help of tools mentioned in this thread, so thank you. One issue that other users should know about: I downloaded and installed AVG (I think this is the same as Ewido), and then could not log on to my computer. When I tried a normal start-up the system would just hang indefinitely. I had to start up in 'safe mode', ran an AVG scan from there, and then completely removed AVG. Once I had done so, everything was fine.0 -

Are you talking about AVG antivirus or AVG antispyware? Either one I've not seen it do what you describe on any pc I've installed them on."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I think they are now one product. I downloaded anti-virus and anti-malware from the same site, but they installed as one program with the second download apparently being a definitions file. The actual program made a point of saying that it was effective against both viruses and spyware.
AVG warned me that it might conflict with the anti-virus program already installed (Ad-Aware and Symantec) so I removed these, but only by using the utility from Windows (XP) control panel. Perhaps this was not effective?0 -

If you were using Norton then that is very awkward to remove by itself and you really need the Norton removal tool (available on the Symantec site). It could definitely explain the behaviour, a conflict between two antivirus programs.
The AVG AS and AVG AV are still two separate programs though so I'm not sure which one you installed, most likely it was the anti virus as the anti spyware is much less likely to have conflicted with anything."She is quite the oddball. If you've gone through the guide at the beginning of this thread then you should be at the stage of being able to post a hijackthis log for everyone to look at, knowing the various methods and scans you've done didn't work."She is quite the oddball.
