Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
I have read this thread with interest as I am forever battling with a weight issue. I am not going to start anything until my mother has gone back to Italy and life has gone back to normal (this Tuesday).

After that, I would like to stay in contact with the people here who are doing something about weight loss, as a means of mutual support!

I have read on several publications that people hoping to stabilise their weight should not take anything with artificial sweeteners as they somehow increase weight - don't remember all the complicated scientific explanation, something to do with the body expecting calories from something sweet and something to do with insuline.

Also read that for optimum weight loss we should eat organic (I do whenever I can) because some of the chemicals used as pesticides are also used to fatten up pigs!

Also that we should not eat completely low fat but should select some 'good' fats such as sensible amounts of olive oil, hemp oil etc.

Looking forward to doing this together with others! Thank you, KC, for starting this thread!

    Love to all

    Morning All,

Its day one then, no coffee and dont I know it. My belly isprotesting too as normally the first thing I do is eat some lovely HM bread with lots of butter. Instead I have a very OS cup of hot water and lemon, no sugar cause I dont think I'm allowed it.

Today am meeting some friends which will be a true test but they are a supportive bunch.

Very money saving this isnt it, a couple of lemon a week for pence as opposed to a jar of coffee and the milk that goes in it.

Am I allowed porridge made with water for brekkie or just fruit?

    Al.

    Caterina,
Would love to stay in contact while we try to loose weight in a gradual, healthy way. Prehaps we'ed better PM/email/msn though cause its not really a MSE discussion :o and might get moved if we chat on the threads.
Anyone else wanting to join/chat please feel free.

What an excellent thread, thanks for starting it KiwiChick :)
Four years ago i decided i didn't want to be fat and 30 and managed to lose over 3 stone by joining SLimming World, i got down to a size 12/14 and felt great, then i started eating the wrong type of food again and i now i don't wanna be 34 and fat and need to lose probably more than 4 stone :(
I'm planning on not eating any processed foods and sticking to home made healthy food, smaller portions and PLENTY of water (i probably don't even drink a pint of anything a day, let alone water!) and to take plenty of exercise to help boost metabolism and fitness levels.
I'd love to keep in touch with other OS weight-losers (?) too as a way of mutual support as i did find that really helped when i was going to SW.
Good luck to anyone that has embarked on a healthy-eating/detox regime :)
    Take care,
    Fran

My approach to the whole losing weight thing is to set myself targets (make sure they are realistic), I plan (not hope-positive thinking) to lose 8 pounds by the summer. I've already lost 8 pounds, which has taken me since August. I havent really gone without anything, to be honest i think i've got to the point where i dont even want a choc bar. I would rather have a slice of bread and butter with my dinner as an occasional treat. When faced with the biscuit tin I think ok I can have a biscuit or I can have a roast potato and just keep going on like that. Make sure i drink plenty of water, if i feel hungry i have a glass of water, i dont feel hungry after that. I think that losing weight is a bit like giving up smoking, there isnt one right way, it is whatever works for you (keeping it safe of course). Good luck all.

Good Luck KC and all other detoxers out there. Just wanted to remind you that you WILL feel shocking for the first few days (maybe upto a week depending on how 'bad' you were before and how strict you're being now) it's your body purging all the toxins, so dont worry. Headaches, stomach aches, flu like symptoms are all the norm.

DH is a "nutritional guru" and runs a business based on nutrition and health, and I thought I'd let you know his 'opinion' on a few things.

    1) Bread - he wont touch the stuff. 90% of the population has some form of wheat intolerance and it can contribute to all sorts of ailments. Although, that said, he bought me a breadmaker for my birthday, cos he knows I wont cut it out, and figures that at least if it's home made you know what's in it.
    2) Coffee - dont touch instant coffee. If you enjoy it you're better off having 1 cup of fresh coffee per day, and reducing it as you can, than having decaff or instant. He compares instant coffee to rats poison!
    3) Water - at least 2 litres per day. Hot water with lemon in is fab, but hot water on it's own is nice too. If you're doing the lemon then slice it up and put it in the freezer - it'll keep for longer and you just add a frozen slice to your water (hot or cold, if it's hot it defrosts the lemon, if it's cold it works like an ice cube. Magic!!)
    4) Processed foods - avoid!!! The salt, sugar and hydrogenated fats in ready meals are frightening. Stick to the OS way and make as much as poss at home.

Now, dh is a bit evangelical, and he does all of this religiously (he has an 80 - 20 rule, if he does it perfectly 80% of the time, the other 20% doesnt matter too much), I however only manage to follow this about 10% of the time. It probably explains why he is a 6ft, 15 stone, 7 miles 3 - 5 times a week running, hunk of a man, and I am 5ft 6inch, 14 stone, sedentary time bomb. I'm consoling myself that being pregnant means i cant possibly diet (dont even think about correcting me :D )

All in all, good luck, and if you want any more info feel free to pm me.
I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle

I am 5ft 11, and 12 1/2 stone, a size 14, sometimes 16 - (was hovering around 13st for the last year, but have just lost some).. But this year I decided that I wanted to lose the weight which I have been meaning to do for the past 3 years, but just eat a lot healthier, as towards the end of last year I was getting cold after cold after cold!!

So since the 28th December I have been back at the gym and also eating a lot of salads, veggies & fruit - I have always drunk 2 litres of water a day, if not 3 litres, so this has never been a problem. But I do have an underactive thyroid which does make losing weight harder (it really does, I am not just saying that, honest!!) :0)

I go to Bodypump a couple of times a week & do cardio work at the gym at least 3 times a week. I definately feel better for it, but its hard to stay motivated when it takes so blimmin long to lose the weight..

I just find that I have to be a bit more organised & plan my meals, and also try and eat a variety of food, try more things etc, as I get stuck in food "ruts" even if the foods are healthy. Apparently your body gets used to certain foods, so you are meant to vary your diet to "shake it up". I have just re-discovered our local market which sells fruit & veg so cheap in comparison to Sainsbury's (our local supermarket)..

I definately want to get down to 11st, and then see how I feel/look then, it would be great to be 10st, but with my height it might be too thin..

    How do you stay motivated?
  • I'd like to lose a stone - I'm now at a nice round (that being the operative word!) 9 stone. I very small so I feel it!
I won't give up tea as I believe in the antioxident properties and all the big tea drinkers in my family look younger and are very healthy - so there!!!!!!
So I'm gonna keep posting on here, I may have the odd relapse - but I'm not perfect.
I only really use olive oil instead of other oils now and I'm much more interested in cutting down on all the crap pumped into food than anything, I did the homemade butter!

Oh Thanks MrsB, you oh sounds like a veritable minefield of info, careful tho, he may find his resources being tapped once too often by us cheeky OSers :p

Your comment about headaches was spot on, I've normally had 6-8 coffeess by now and am very nearly dying for one! Head is literally pounding and it was only reading about it being "rats poison" that stopped me reaching for the jar..................... :rotfl:

I was wondering if you could find out from OH where a person goes to have tests done for wheat intolerance etc??? I am addicted to carbs, now dont laugh cause I really do mean it. I eat a loaf of bread a day and quite happily tuck into spuds, pasta, rice etc. If I feel sick at all the first thing I reach for for is ready salted crisps, dont know why but they make me feel better. I could quite happily go without choc and even booze but shudder at the thought of this fortnight without bread.

Motavation is key, its you lot who will keep me going. All the PM and MSN messages I've had is just so lovely. It seems a lot of us are in the same boat. How do you all feel about a weekly weigh in or maybe a group chat every couple of days to see how we are coping, what things help, what to eat etc????? It would have to be MSN tho causewe'll get booted off here :o
