Thank you Sheel, I have been waiting for this to post some tips!
And the first is: Work out which is the best time of day to weigh yourself. I've always done it first thing in the morning, but today I was working at home in the morning so showered late and thus didn't do it until lunchtime and I had apparently lost 4 lbs in 2 days! Which I don't quite believe until it stays off, but there we go, I was dead chuffed.
Will leave you all on tenterhooks for my other tips as I am being booted off the computer so someone can do his homework!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Here's some tips for eating less. Years ago my GP said I should lose some weight, and I asked what advice he could give and he said "Whatever you would normally eat, halve it."
I didn't follow his advice to the letter but I did cut down in quite a few areas, and I'm very glad I did or I would now be humungous.
It's not easy to eat only one biscuit when you've always had 2 (or more!) before, but eating several is only a habit. If you've always made sandwiches with 4 slices of bread, try just 3 and see if you're really still hungry. I'm now down to 2, the only problem is that I do like variety in my meals which it's difficult to fit into one sandwich. And on a good day I remember that only having 2 slices of bread does NOT mean I have 'earned' a packet of crisps. ;D
Weigh or measure food before cooking: if you cook too much pasta you know you will want to finish it up rather than let it go to waste, so only cook the right amount.
And work out how much you / your family really need in a portion. This morning I cooked porridge and it said on the packet I needed half a cupful of oats per person, but I thought that was rather a lot so I tried a quarter cup measure and it was fine, just about right for me. If I'd used half a cupful I'd have eaten it all, I know I would.
Finally, the one I struggle with the most. We mums hate wasting food. But where is is wasted most, on my waist or in the waste bin? (Sorry!)Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Some tips for making yourself walk more. Please note some of them aren't very MoneySaving, and it helps to have a house with a driveway, especially one with gates which you have to keep locked if you want to keep your back garden secure and where it's awkward to get the car on and off the road!
1. Park your car on the street outside your house.
2. Wait for some friendly person to smash your windscreen.
3. If possible, arrange for this to happen when the car is overheating and needs to go to the garage.
This could give you up to two weeks of walking to and from the bus stop in order to get to work!
a) Having learned your lesson from 2 above, start parking the car on the drive with the gates locked even when you know you're going out again later.
b) Realise that it is now quicker to walk to some places you used to drive to than unlock the gates, get the car off the drive, lock the gates, drive to destination and repeat the whole process in reverse on your return.
i) Get lost on your way to work because you get off the train at the wrong stop.
ii) Go to buy milk and walk the long way round, get lost and find there's no way off this playing field except walking all the way back or climbing over a wall (fortunately low!) Do NOT take enough money to also buy chocolate or ice cream to eat on the way home.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I agree, with Savvy_Sue, reducing portion sizes definately seems to be the way forward.
I can also recommend shopping with tonsilitis. Realised this morning that we had completly run out of anything that could be used to put a reasonable meal together and I had to drag my rather sick behind to the supermarket. I was feeling so sorry for myselfthat not even the gooiest (?), stickiest looking chocolate cake could tempt its way into my basket, just lots of fresh orange.
thanks to everyone one on here for being so friendly and helpfull0 -
Hi everyone I got weighed yesterday and Miracles do take place. I stayed the same. I have had a terrible week - my daughters ex partner who is the father of my 2 fantastic grandchildren died of a heart attack at the age of 32. This has created lots of family problems so when I was faced with the choice of being thinner or eating a scone with jam I am afraid the scone won but I am now back on track but I wont be going to my slimming club next week as I am going into hospital to have my veins operated on. Never a dull moment here!!!!. So good luck to all our friends on this site and I will be in touch soon0

I find the best way to lose weight is to; 1. stop eating to much. 2. Get some exercise.
Its simple, if you eat more calories than you use up, you will get fat.0 -
...but how do you know how many calories you use up in a day ???~anything but ordinary~0

I'm slimming with the help of slimming world. I've lost 16lbs in 5 weeks and I'm very proud of myself. What is helping me is the vast range of "free foods". Although it might not be frugal to spend 35 quid every 10 weeks to get weighed its working for me!0
