Forgot to ask are there any of the other MSN things I can delete, before I carefully reinstall it - such as

    O16 - DPF: !!00B71CFB-6864-4346-A978-C0A14556272C} (Checkers Class) - http://messenger.zone.msn.com/binary/msgrchkr.cab
    O16 - DPF: {B38870E4-7ECB-40DA-8C6A-595F0A5519FF} (MsnMessengerSetupDownloadControl Class) - http://messenger.msn.com/download/M...pDownloader.cab
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

    etc

The 09 and those 016 entries are OK to go if you want. Just use HJT as you have done in the past.

They will return if the site is visited again and applications downloaded.

I want to say a HUGE THANKS for all your help particularly pchelpman as I would have been completely stuck otherwise.

Everything I have downloaded and run has helped and the PC is now running very quickly, infact it seems to be like a new machine.

It's also shown me that even though I thought I was doing enough by running AVG, Ad aware, spybot, Zone Alarm and windows updates - all updated regularly - I still wasn't doing enough. Have also just given my daughters and will their friends more lectures about what they do on their pc.

    Thanks again.

  • If you really wanted to guild the lilly on this the final polishing touch would be the clean up the registry with something like Registry Mechanic and then run a defrag on your hard disk.

Is Registry Mechanic easy to run or do I need to back up everything first?

Dont get Registry Mechanic it is badly flawed as it always always removes
accompat.txt files and will knacker the registry and not fix it....

However https://www.ccleaner.com has a small registry fixing tool bundled and has never
screwed any registry settings up on my PC like Reg Mech... You have been warned.
  • Well I've been running it weekly for a couple of years now and never had a single problem with it.

Inters - can you post a link so I can read up on that problem?

p.s. It's very easy to run and will automatically create a System Restore Point before it makes any changes.

    TIA

No I cant as I cant find a link but I will say that I have had to tell
folk to restore the backup file then find accompat.txt file then uncheck for
repair then run another scan.. this however does not work all the time
    maybe about 30% success...

I have removed from my machine because of the problems and this is
especially true with image files aswell anything used in the file list will
be affected by a missing accompat.txt file.

This is from personal and customer experiences.
