I offloaded a 55,000-mile Hyundai last year. Every started to break - radiator, head gasket, shocks, you name it. Figured it was cheaper to buy a newer car.

It was 13 years old admittedly. Still, a 61,000-mile Hyundai can't have more than 3 or 4 years left in it can it?

Miles do not kill a car -- years do.

At 13 years old, of course the car would be starting to fall to pieces. You look at most cars, Fords, Vauxhalls whatever, and they'll be tired at 13 years old. Radiators and shocks are consumable items anyway, so the head gasket is the only thing that can be put down to reliability. As the engine in your car was a Mitsubishi lump, the fault must have been caused by neglect as these engines are as tough as they get.

In any case, the cars Hyundai were building 13 years ago were an entirely different thing to those produced more recently. The Korean cars get much better with every generation, and there have been several in the intervening years.

Back to the topic, Hyundai Coupes are very well made. The engines and transmissions are still Mitsubishi-derived and should run for large distances without major fault. The only common problem area with these cars is the clutch; make sure it doesn't judder. The clutches can be a bit weak and won't take abuse, but they're relatively cheap to replace (£200 at an independent) and the rest of the car is very strong.

First bad report I've heard. Mind you anyone can end up with a duffer and it can also depend on many things ie maintenance, way it was driven etc

It was lavishly maintained, but pottering around town for 5,000 miles a year doesn't help.

I very much doubt it. It was serviced twice a year for 13 years by the same Hyundai dealer. I think the issue was 13 years of town driving and, as you say, sheer age.

I had a Ford a few years ago which also basically started to disintegrate after 6 years. Perhaps today's are better.

I've read up on some info on them.
    Useful info here:

    http://www.newcarnet.co.uk/Hyundai_Coupe_roadtest.html?id=161

The evolution mainly differs in terms of different cam and exhaust, upping power to 154BHP from 137BHP, torque is up slightly too 140lb-ft from 134lb-ft.
Quite reasonable performance figures from the output, car must weigh in at around 1150KG which is OK.

Just a pity it's front wheel drive.
    Happy chappy
  • Many thanks Tom.

It looks like I'm going ahead with the purchase. I've had a technicialns report completed. One or two minor things that need sorting out. Otherwise the technician reckons its a vehicle in first class condition and well worth the money.

Looks great. I've never seen that model before. It's not an import though, presumably?
