to use the Recovery disk you need to hit F2 when the laptop is booting up and enter BIOS. you need need to change the "boot sequence" to boot from the Cd drive first. once you have booted from the CD you should have an option to "repair" Windows on its own..use that option , a full recovery which is normally the other option will roll back yout Laptop to the same set up as the day it arrived, but you will lose all your files etc

I had the identical symptoms but only under the following conditions:

    1. A wireless network card was installed havent got a wireless network card
    2. Laptop had just come out of hibernation. the laptop was off, as i turned if off by the power button

Cured when I moved from Win 2000 to XP, at the momment i have xp but it still behaves erratically if I use the hibernate feature several times without rebooting i never ever let it go into hibernation.

I guess i have broken it
  • UPDATE :j

well i have just phoned HP to try and sort this lappy out and they wouldnt touch it due to the fact that its over 1 year old so they told me to phone comet (the person I purchased the lappy from with extended warenty).

I have just come off the phone to them and they said it was definetly a hardware problem and i would have to wipe the computer  they asked if i had any information i needed on the pc but thanks to ffym it was all on cds anyway :)

so now i am running the operating systems cd and once its done i have to phone them back to check the drivers? i then have to leave it with nothing on it for 24 hours and then add my broadband etc.

if this blue screen then happens again i have to phone them back and they will send me a new laptop

    :rotfl:

ah well, thanks everyone, esspecially albertross, i have learnt loads and i will no doubt be running loads of antivirus stuff etc when its up and running again as i dont want to be sat here in a years time saying the same things lol :)

I will leat you know how it goes :)
  • another final UPDATE :j

So thanks for you help everyone and i will hopefully post some possitive news shortly :)

*btw i am still using my brothers pc and will be on every now and again but not as i used to :)*

I wouldn't normally recommend the 5 year warranties, they are a good money making scheme for Comet, but maybe in this instance it has paid off!

Sorry to hear you are still having problem. Just to clarify, it still crashed, after you have reinstalled XP from scratch, and you haven't connected it to the internet (i.e. picked up a virus - as I said before, there is a worm that shut's the PC down in 60 seconds, and causes a constant reboot, so just wanted to be sure you didn't have this, if you have done a full restore of the system CD, that would rule out a virus).

While you are on your Brothers PC, you might as well check him out for viruses, patching, and spyware! lol
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • it was a gift and i didnt pay for the insurance or the lappy :) so yes it has paid off

we never got to do a wipe and xp installation, each time we tried it said we couldnt recondition (i thinks that what its called) the drive so the person on the end of the phoen said the hard drive has broken :(

if i touch his com he will go mad lol, he says he does it all, i am not to sure but hey its his problem if it breaks lol :)

*i will post when its all fixed and i am back on* :)
