You need an upto date (resident) scanner running all the time, Avast & AVG are free, if you don't want to pay for Norton, there are many others..

We seem to have had a series of infections reported on techy board this weekend, some of which are nasty (e.g. collecting online banking passwords etc..), so can't stress enough how important it is to do regular scans with upto date software..

Checkout the links provided by the other techies above for options

You need to extract the .iso file from the zip file, then usually double clicking the iso will load it into your CD Writing software, if that doesn't work, launch your CD Writing software, and open the .iso file from there, then burn the CD

also its just got weirder :( after i posted it was reloading the page and a small box poped up that was called system shutdown. it explained it was going to shut down the sytem by authority/system and on the bottom it had c/windows/system32/services.cxe. and had stauscode 128. my computer then froze and i had to turn if off and back on :(

see my last post about making the boot CD.

That message could be legit, but can also be an indication of your PC not being patched properly (lsass vulnerability).

Have you run windowsupdate as suggested?

Try it again to make sure you are patched.

Every now and again usually around once every two/three weeks my lappy would frezze (while on the internet) and then the scren would go blank and a blue screen would flash up wth loads of info and at the bottom it says 'begining physical memory dump'.
    :(

I don't want to be a prophet of doom but the times I have seen these symptoms it was caused by hard disk data corruption followed by hard disk failure! I hope I'm wrong but just a warning to make sure you've backed up anything important.

Try running this as a further check that you still don't have anything nasty lurking on the PC.

as well as doing another windows update..

    It's a pain, I know..

There are errors(bugs)/security weaknesses (buffer overflow vulnerabilities etc.) in Windows software (and all software). The nasty people out there, find these errors, and then write something to exploit the error (a virus/trojan etc..), then they launch it on the unsuspecting public. If you plug in a 2 year old version of XP onto the internet, you can catch one of these nasties, without going to a single webpage. Virus scanners don't always catch them, because A/V companies react after the event, not before.

Microsoft release fixes to the original problem, at least monthly, they are patches, and you get them by running Windowsupdate.

The Lsass vulnerability and it's associated exploits, can remotely infect your PC, and cause it to shutdown in 60 seconds. I think the trigger date for one of these was 5/1/06 - not sure, need to check. So you may have picked this up.

PS. turn off system restore before doing a scan, instructions are on the stinger page link above..
