You can get BIO enabled diesels now i believe SAAB and Skoda are releasing them, the problem with current Bio diesel is its only a 5% oil 95% diesel mix, the reason for this is that it degades the rubber parts of fuel lines, It is beeter for the engine and it does seem to give a better MPG, it stops or reduces the diesel knock.

There are a number of places in yorkshire that sell it all of them are by a company called RIX there is also a list of BIO diesel stations on the internet sorry cant find the link at the moment but google finds it.

Expect your car to stink for 20 miles or so while the BIO cleans everything out.

Im surprised with all this fuel economy osting no one has mentioned redex or similar to clear carbon build up on injectors that must give you a decent saving on older cars.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Read Joshua Tickell’s book From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank: the complete guide to using vegetable oil as an alternative fuel. Or alternatively check out https://www.veggievan.org
  • I read the article with interest and tried the link to pipelinecard which does not work.
Also all of the links in the forum post do not work either.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me.
  • Peak Oil is going to drive up the cost of fuel, gas, electricity and life.

    This has already started.

    For Overview! see http://www.odac-info.org

Oil is the world's premier source of energy and is fundamental to almost every important function of modern life.! It fuels 95 percent of land, sea and air transport, so the efficient movement of raw materials and goods, as well as personal mobility, is almost entirely oil-dependent. Food production too relies heavily on oil to run farm machinery and to make fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides. Oil generates 40 percent of the world's commercial energy, provides heating fuel, and drives industry and commerce. No other existing energy source can match the versatility, convenience and low cost of oil. Moreover, it supplies feedstock for many thousands of manufactured products as diverse as plastics, medicines, clothing and building materials.

  • Hi,
forgive me if this has been discussed already but has anyone considered adding small amounts of Acetone to the fuel system to increase the combustion efficiency and thereby improve mileage?

There are a few articles discussing it here.. http://www.answers.com/acetone%20as%20a%20fuel%20additive

I asked about this a few months ago. Someone at work was into buying Acetone and putting it into their petrol as an Octane booster.

I don't think this link is mentioned anywhere, but worth a check to see if you can find a petrol station selling cheap fuel near you.

Rather than turn my engine off when approaching hold ups e.g. traffic lights, roundabout etc (as Khizman does) I either drop the clutch or take the car out of gear and coast to hold up. I also use this technique when going down a steep enough hill.

My journey to work is around 21 miles and I probably coast 3 - 4 miles of that. I think it's because (and using some of the other techniques described in this forum) of this that I can get ~730 miles out of the tank of my 1.4HDi Peugeot 206. That's about 60MPG in rush hour traffic

Just found out that my Diesel has an EGR Valve, which according to the manufacturers discussion forum can lose as much as 5 - 7 mpg depending on how the vehicle is driven. Seems that some owners have disconnected it (and capped the vaccum pipe), to squeeze more MPG in the wake of rising fuel prices, with no adverse effects on performace or engine. However you may fall foul of MOT emissions.

Disclaimer:- i'm only repeating what i've read publically elsewhere, and you'll find discussions on this on any VW / AUDI / Skoda forum.

BTW:- Biodiesel is often the same price as oridinary diesel, compared to some 20p a litre cheaper in other european countres. My wallet forbids me to have a conscience. If the government can't be bothered about the environment by offering the same incentives as tried and tested elsewhere, why should I.

An idling engine uses fuel (to keep the engine idling ). Leaving the engine in a higher gear and taking your foot off the accelerator uses no fuel as modern fuel systems recognise the overrun and cut fuel. It will come back between 1200 and 2000 rpm. You just need to be aware of the road a long way ahead.

Advanced drivers recommend you should never coast, as you have less control and if you need to accelerate it takes about a second to recognise the threat, dip the clutch, re-engage gear and raise the clutch, and start accelerating. And of course turning the engine off is even worse - you will eventually loose power assistance to brakes and steering. I suppose you would save fuel if you're in a hospital bed ;)

Diesels are by nature more economical around town and at small throttle openings, but sensible, proactive driving can increase economy dramatically. FWIW, SHMBO's 1l petrol Yaris still does 53+ mpg in and out of Leeds every day without any major effort.
