I have been noting down prices of goods before the change in VAT and after the change in VAT.

Amazon prices have NOT changed even though they are advertising on their website that you can buy goods in November at the new 15% VAT rate.

I know 2.5% is only a £2.50 savings on a £100 item, but companies like Amazon are conning us in believing we are getting a better deal.

Amazon have passed on the cuts, they have a temporary fix on the site by using a promotion code until they change it permanently.

As they are in Jersey maybe pre-paid import VAT is subject to different rules?

Or 2.5% less of a loss. Have you considered how much it would cost the throretailers to change all their prices throughout the store. Even somewhere that uses barcode scanners would have to spend a number of hours changing all the shelf end prices. I dont see why retailers should foot the bill for a half baked idea like the 2.5% VAT cut that will make no noticeable difference.
    .

i know morrisons are passing on the vat decrease, over 24,000 price decreases:eek: , thhey are not panicking though, as the prices on the shelf edge labels will be more than the actual price, there will be no implications until all the labels are changed, only thing the customers wont know what the true price i yet, nice surprise when they go through the tills though, Dave

I can beat that, B&Q have over 35,000 products ;) We're keeping stickers on the shelves at the same price but swiping a card at the tills that gives a 2.12% discount. See HERE.

And I suppose that passing on a 0.5% mortgage rate drop is pointless as well???

There is quite a difference between a mortgage lender doing a rate change which has always been a common occurrence and only impacts a few multi national companies whose whole banking system is around inter bank lending rates. And this VAT cut which impacts hundreds of thousands of traders who last had to make a VAT cut in 1974.

ps. Your not Canadian are you? Just that I have a friend called Scooter.

Well I wanna buy a new (well nearly new actually) car, and not many dealers seem to have decreased their prices. In fact a couple of them last week told me that because they'd purchased the cars with the 17.5% rate, they'd have to sell at the same price. Surely don't they reclaim the 17.5% and only declare the 15%?? It can make a couple of hundred pounds difference on a £10k car.

If you're buying a car that is not new it's likely the dealership are taking advantage of the second-hand goods scheme for VAT where VAT is only accounted for on the profit margin, not on the total value. That could be one of the reasons why you're not really seeing a reduction. The reason behind this is to avoid double taxation where goods have already been sold with VAT when new.

Also, if you were to sell (or part-exchange) your car to a garage you wouldn't charge them VAT anyway so there wouldn't be any VAT for them to recover.

New cars will have VAT on and if you're buying one from today you should make sure it's charged at 15%.

This code didn't work for me or several other forum members this weekend, and when I looked today everything I bought from Amazon this weekend has gone up!! (not by a little either in some cases:mad: ).
So glad I decided not to wait for the vat decrease!!

Was in TKMaxx and Staples today, both of which ARE passing on the cut to customers. The discount comes off at the till and staples had multiple signs and SEL's saying that the vat had dropped to 15%.

Only saved a quid on a £45 spend, better than nothing though!
