I'm a research scientist at a University. I did a PhD first, which means my salary is now around £30,000 after 3 years post PhD. With only a degree the salary is around £20-25,000.
I can love my job, depending on what I'm doing. If things go wrong it's upsetting, but if they go well it's exciting. I make my own hours and have a lot of freedom, but try to stick to 8-9 hours a day.
My salary goes up around £1000 a year. But contracts are short term (2-3 years average) and to stay in the job for more then 10 years takes a lot of dedication and time and part of your soul (ie to become a lecturer/proffessor).
I'm not sure what I'll do next.0 -

Thought I would start this thread so as people can get ideas of what jobs are out there.
People are always asking what job can I do now and then. If we all list what our current job is then people can browse and get some inspiration. I'll start

I'm training as a chartered surveyor in the rural faculty - not much money £13k a year, but they pay for my professional membership, exam and conference fees and the lifestyle is great.
You think?! I'd get out of surveying in an instant if I could. I thought it sounded great at Uni - out and about the whole time, great money, great car, lovely big house...................................not been out the office in 5 months, got an 8 yr old VW, 2 bed flat
In todays climate when I've heard of a number of people being made redundant in the profession though, I realise that for all my gripes, I'm one of the lucky ones. I've not even been called as an Assessor this year for the APC Assessments as there are so few people being put forward. Bleek times.Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0
