what has your debt cost you other than money ?

The reason ive decided to get rid of my debt is the fact that it has cost me the love of my life
I met her 5 1/2 years ago and was straight with her from the offset
I told her about my debt and she was happy to give it a go
She put up with no holidays, not going out much etc but it finally got the better of her when i couldnt afford to buy a house with her cos of my debts
She tried for all that time but i suppose she just gave up and had had enough
We split 18 months ago i it has nearly killed me
Ive thought about ending it all but what good would that do ?
I decided to get things in order by getting rid of this noose around my neck and im slowly getting there
I will never let debt ruin my life ever again and this forum and the inspirational diaries and threads have been a life saver (literally)
I feel like im in no mans land at the mo as it seems to be taking an age to reach my next goal of £25000 but i will get there
15 payments left on a loan and that will be the start of the big push
I cant wait !

and I don't feel I could get involved with anyone till my debt is gone and I don't feel guilty about every pound I spend.

  • Hiya,

You will get to your goal, just keep going and think of the better life you will have when you get there!

My debts (or should I say, our debts!) have put a strain on my relationship with OH. We have been in debt since we got married 2 years ago so it hasn't been the best starts.

It also puts a strain on me emotionally, not being able to enjoy the run up to Christmas like everyone else....

On the plus side it has taught me a valuable lesson in life and I will never get in debt again. I have been very stupid in the past but my head is well and truly out of the sand and it has made me a better person.

Fantastic! As someone from the otherside of the financial world, a debt-free person from the word go, I still stand open-mouthed at the dedication and strength of character shown by those who have belatedly come to their senses. I stand by slack-jawed in awe at your sense of purpose and commitment. Best Wishes to you all...

Its cost me my happiness. I will never be truly happy while I am in debt. It seems that we are never destined to be debt free. I can't even remember what it feels like not to be in debt. We almost paid it off this year and then my husband lost his job and it has increased again and now we don't stand a chance of paying it off anytime soon. Also sleep. I can't sleep nights.

Can I just say as someone who is now debt free that it can be done. You can make it happen. But when I was in debt I lost my piece of mind. Or rather I should say when I realised I was in bad debt, I lost my piece of mind. I felt really dumb to have done it etc.

Luckily I met someone who was further ahead of me on the finance savvy curve, and that sorted me out.

Commiserations mate - I'm sorry that this has cost you your relationship. Debts put a terrible strain on people at the best of times and when it's largely a one-sided thing, even more!

I put a tremendous effort into keeping my 'debtself' and my personality seperate so that my gf doesn't suffer, but black moods, depression and constant doubt are hallmarks of debting.

While my debts may be small in the grand scheme of things, I've been struggling with them for 3-4 years already and I know how it is when every second thought is about debts and self-loathing for being so stupid in the first place :( You know that old chestnut about men supposedly thinking about sex every six seconds? I'm like that with debt.

Please stick around the forums, as the enthusiasm, wise advice and downright hearty resilience of so many of the folk here will help to carry you through. I've been reading them since 2006 and the responses and support I see demonstrated every day here genuinely make the load lighter.
  • For me, it's been confidence. It can be difficult to feel good and positive in yourself when yo uare worrying about where next weeks food is coming from. It's pretty tough to be happy for other when they are talking about holidays and gadgets when you're at home making do with the worst of everything.

Having said that, I can't complain too much. I have my own home which I've lived in for 7 years, and will own outright when I'm 44, I have my own car, and I'm nearly debt-free. Compared to some people my age (32) I'm doing fine and I need to remind myself of that occasionally.

Sleep is also another big killer. I've been so used to not sleeping for about the past 3 years, that even though life is so much more positive now, I can still barely relax enough to sleep as my body has just become to used it.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
