What's the strangest "substitute" item you've been offered on your home delivery?

I don't use online ordering any more for groceries. I'm boycotting anything from Israel at the moment, and I'm sick and tired of receiving products from that country. Originally it was just avocados I had to be wary of, but now it's regularly products such as fresh basil, and much much more. I'm sorry, but I'm not eating anything from land stolen by force from Palestinian farmers. And that's where a lot of "Israeli" produce comes from. I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, it's not the time or the place, but since we're talking about online grocery deliveries I thought I'd explain why I don't use them any more.
I used to spend £100 a week on online grocery deliveries. Now I spend zilch. I hope that the Waitroses and Tescos out there are reading this thread and think twice before supporting Apartheid, and not send us any more stuff from Israel. Or at the very least, TELL US THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN ONLINE. Can it be that difficult! Sheesh!!- At least then we can make an informed choice.
The irony is: these companies purport to being "socially responsible" by offering customers "green" delivery times to lump in delivery times close to times they are delivering in the local area. Socially responsible my a*se. If they were truly concerned about corporate social responsibility, they would allow people like myself to be able to see online what country the produce is coming from, because truly socially responsible people do not want to give money to countries like Israel. In the same way that I didn't either during the South African sanctions (yes, I'm no spring chicken, lol). Fine, whatever, you lose my custom. And that of many more socially responsible, intellectual, left-of-centre freethinkers out there.0 -
I ordered large online shop and my shop got mixed up with someone elses shopping:eek: . Luckily drivers mistake and he found mine. My DS3(4) was most put out, cos he liked the look of the other bods shopping:rotfl:Grocery challenge june £300/ £211-50.

I've only tried online shopping once, from Asda .. was disappointed with the care taken in selecting items - almost everything fresh had very short use-by dates, several same-day, whereas I always try and grab the longest date on the shelf - particularly important on a big shop as the stuff has to last a while!
We had a few subs, but the only really weird one we had was getting frozen flavoured parsnips instead of some prepared potatoes. Wouldn't have been too bad except we'd ordered parsnips anyway, so ended up with loads of the damn things.0 -
This is such a funny thread, but I know only too well the aggravation caused by 'Supermarket Subs'. Tesco seem to be the worst offender, especially as they promise your shopping will be done by a 'personal shopper' and now we learn that the computer makes the substitution choices! I have also had some unusual substitutions (500g Strawberry Yogurt carton in place of Natural Yogurt....not sure that would go too well in my curry!) but two things really get my goat: you order from a special offer and it is mysteriously 'not available' when your order is delivered...but something 3 times the price is sent instead; or you order something really ordinary like toilet rolls and no substitution is sent it is simply listed as 'not available today'...are we really to believe there were no toilet rolls on sale in the store at all??? I almost always end up going to Sainsbury's to do a 'top-up' shop!:money: Dedicated disciple of MoneySavingExpert.com and Savvy MoneySaver :A

I ordered a 10-pack of condoms. They delivered two rubber gloves and a pair of scissors.0

Is this the most sensible substitution? Delivery from WaitroseDirect this week. For a cucumber they had substituted 2 x half cucumbers.......but had supplied these free of charge! Seemed a good deal to me!0
-
Sounds like Waitrose have got their act together lolarentt - though at the prices they charge I would hope the cucumbers WERE free! I suppose you really do get what you pay for and I'm shopping at the 'budget' end with Tesco perhaps I should lower my expectations!:money: Dedicated disciple of MoneySavingExpert.com and Savvy MoneySaver :A
