How do i find my IP address so I can see where it would take him?

    C xx

if you are using windows, open up command prompt(you will find it under acesories in the windows menu) and type in ipconfig, this should give you your i.p address, but i use this website, and that tells me i am using a completely differednt i.p to what ipconfig told me  , Dave

  • Hi all,

My IP check says that I am in London

ipconfig is likely giving the IP address of your router not your real IP address:

    Hopw this helps.

    My IP address:78.32.109.34

If you go here, it tells you my IP address traces back to Warrington:
    http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

Only problem is, if you went to Warrington, you're at the completely wrong end of the M62 to where I live. Warrington is the location of my ISPs servers.

Now the Police could find you but they'd have to take the IP address and time it was used to the ISP with a court order to force the ISP to give the information as to which customer was assigned that IP address at that time.

good tool that, says im in Edinburgh when im miles away,

That's not necessarily wrong. I had an ISP who had servers in the UK and Germany. Depending on what IP address I got assigned, I either apparently came from Germany or England. It was quite good really as the best Counterstrike and Battlefield 2 servers are all German.

    Conor,
I'm not suggesting it's wrong, just having a friendly dig at DCFC79, 'cos I'm even further away from my server than he is. ;)

ipconfig will only give you your private IP (only useful for resolution on a private network). For you public IP, use something like whatsmyip.org

OP, What's your ISP? (you don't have to answer if you're still stressed!) Chances are unless you've paid extra money to your ISP, you've got a dynamic IP address, which will change everytime you log on, thus making it useless for tracing back to your computer. If you only have one computer on your network, you might be interested in Zonealarm. It's a fantastic (free) firewall that will stop ALL untrusted incoming and outgoing connections. If you have more than one computer and use them to connect to each other, don't bother with it as it will prevent you from networking them.
