Track someone from an IP address

Hi guys,

Being hasseled by an 'old friend' of mine who keeps emailing me. I've ignored them so far but saw he had his own website in the signature of one of the emails.

Anyway, out of nosyness I did a stoopid thing and visted the site today and on one of the pages he states there is a 'tracker' which can pinpoint any IP address which visits the site down to the street you're in so he can see who's visited.

Basically I do not want this guy turning up on my doorstep - he's already caused trouble, infected my computer with keystroke spyware (got email and bank passwords) and threatened my parents (my dad is elderly and has Parkinsons and gets stressed easily)

So - is there such a thing and how accurate is it?

  • He may be able to get the IP of your internet provider but not of your particular computer unless you have a static IP. He's basically talking rot, don't worry but if you have found his website, a quick whois lookup may show you HIS address.
    Cheers

If you're worried about spyware or trackers, install ad-aware by Lavasoft (there is a free version), this scans your pc for any malware or spyware.

Now I may be mistaken (doubt it) , but if he does have a tracker on his website which logs all the ip addresses that visit the site, a) he won't know which one is yours, and b) your public ip address is will trace to your internet service provider, not to your local computer - even if it does, ip addresses are not like postcodes so your average joe won't be able to trace it anyhow

Sorry I have no idea whether I have a static IP address or not  I'm not particularly brilliant with these things. Thanks Craigoldfield, makes me feel a bit better! We have another laptop on this connection and used to have a desktop too.

He sounds like a !!!!; and is talking nonsense - the only person arriving at anybodies doorstep is a man in a white coat for said 'friend' :rotfl:

LOL, thanks free. He's a real drama queen and 'knows people'. he's a threatening bully and I wish I'd never known him. I think he knows what town I live in now, but not where or where I work though my parents haven't moved so he'd probably watch their house first. Still scary though especially as my OH away until Sunday

As said above, I wouldn't worry about him turning up on your doorstep, just block any of his email, don't open anything dodgy and keep yourself protected with decent, up to date antivirus and spyware programs. Unless you have paid extra for a static IP, likelihood is, you don't have one.
  • no way can he trace you via IP address (unless he gets a court order and presents it to your ISP)
