I think it should be pointed out that there is also a benefits forum on MSE where queeries about ALL benefits including DLA can be posted

It's not recommended, however. It might be fine for quick questions - but for forms such as the DLA forms, you're much better off seeking advice on a 'professional' forum. Not to discredit MSE - but quite frankly, you can get better help elsewhere.

  • I was just wondering if the claim will be successfull. He has no sense of danger and runs of when outside, he sits at his open bedroom window, He sleeps from 11pm till 6am, he cuts his clothes, wires, paper if gets scissors, he does headstands on the sofa and jumps from chair to chair, he pees wherever he likes, he wakes in the night sometimes screaming. i tell him to get dressed about 10 times to find he still isnt dressed, he beats up on his sister and he is struggling with maths and english at school. the doctor has refered him to a specialist doctor for ADHD. he is nearly 7 yrs old.

If he requires more care than other children of his age... Benefits and Work advice is very comprehensive, read it carefully and use examples to back up your claims. Ring up for an application because they'll take your claim from the day you ring, but then download the application form so you can spend your time filling it in and reviewing it carefully.

I am putting in a claim for my son who is visually impaired. I just wondered how long does it usually take for them to make a decision?

    They usually quote 8-12 weeks
However many take a much shorter time and many can take longer, It is difficult to generalise and the8 - 12 weeks is an average

Alot depends how much you have put on the claim form, if they need to write out to gp/hospital/schools etc hen yes it can sometimes drag on cos these people are busy enough too without the burden of this added work (though dr's get a wee fee to sncourage them to do the reports)

First things first - make sure you get an acknowledgement from them within 2-3 weeks - if not ring em (08457 123456) and ask if received) If poss copy the forms before you send them
  • We found out today that our son has been awarded DLA. He was awarded middle rate for care and lower rate for mobility as we expected. I used the information from Benefit and Work along with advice from RNIB and the National Blind Children's Society. It proved invaluable in filling in the forms.

I could be charitable and say thats debatable,i`ll be honest and say that its rubbish, there is a wealth of knowledge on the mse benefits forum, from people who either work in the system or who have many long years experience of claiming. And of course unlike some forums that charge £20 membership or more, like the rest of mse its FREE:money:
