    Hi all

To help with this, i am thinking of joining the benefits and work website - has anyone any experience of this, as it costs £20 to join, and i dont want to waste money when it is really tight at the moment.

Does anyone know of any other (pref free) sites

benefits and work, in my experience well worth it. i renewed my membership because they are so up to date about everything and on the ball. even if you only get low rate care or mobility for your daughter, after the first month and a bit you will ahve gotten your 20quid back, thats how i justified spending what was then 16quid for membership given that money was tight.

there used to be guides on the bhas website, but they hadnt been updated when the forms changed, and i could not find any other guides on the net. i have since heard that the bhas guides have been taken down all together.

other places that may help, a welfare rights or family worker (there might be one attached to the school/ camhs, cab (but depends on your local cab and how good their benefits advisors are), dial (uk) i have heard great things about if there is one near you.
  • Jet cat, most benefits advisors will make home visits if you need them as a matter of policy (tho sometimes you have to push a little).

If you can't find a charity prepared to come out your social worker if you have one can probably do it (mine was great and wrote a letter of support in addition).

I'd strongly advise against doing it yourself if your not sure as you may end up having to appeal which is alot more work and you would definatly need help to do that.
as you are a carer I would try and find your local carers resource centre or similar (your gp surgery should know) and some one from their should be able to help.

    Hi all

i am about to start the long process of completing the dla application form for my daughter. SHe has been previously diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, and at the moment, school are about to make a referral to CAMHS re possible Aspergers.

To help with this, i am thinking of joining the benefits and work website - has anyone any experience of this, as it costs £20 to join, and i dont want to waste money when it is really tight at the moment.

From looking at the criteria which has been previously posted, i think she may qualify for low care/ low mobility, but not really sure on how to word it properly. As i have my own health issues, going to the CAB is really difficult, so i am going to try and fill it in the best i can - but then if i need to go to appeal, to get more help then. Probably seems a daft way of doing it, but i need to get the ball rolling!!

Does anyone know of any other (pref free) sites which may be able to help me decribe her needs - particularly her problems with communication and concentration - ie processing skills.

    Hi

I am a member of the benefits and work site. I would say it's well worth the money, loads of information, I found it a great help filling in the forms and going to the medicals.

Good luck on your form filling, I know it can be quite daunting.
  • Hi,

My mum has twice had to go to appeal to get DLA. At the last renewal she followed the Benefits and Work guides and was awarded Higher Mobility and Care straight away.

    Definitely worth joining.

I just joined Benefits and work after reading this thread. I am about to put in a claim for my visually impaired son. I had already filled in the forms but felt I might not have been on the right tracks. The info I downloaded from Benefits and work was very helpful and I am going to fill in the forms again.

  • One of the disability forums in the top sticky has loads of advice on how to apply for DLA, it helped me tremendously. Here's the direct link. Make yourself a cuppa, it makes long reading.

  • Oh and don't forget that your local Welfare Right Unit can help you fill out the form for free!
  • I am putting in a claim for my son who is visually impaired. I just wondered how long does it usually take for them to make a decision?

Normally it takes about 12 weeks for them to reach a decision for a first claim,i remember it did for mine but if they decide in your sons favour they will award you backpay from the date they recieved your claim.

They also write to you to let you know they have recieved your claim form and tell you how long to leave it before you are welcome to call them if you havnt already heard by then.
