Are Work Trials compulsory

I think that you should write a formal complaint to the district manager of the DWP.
The advice you are receiving at the JC is just plain wrong.
According to JCP guidance a work trial must be for a specific job vacancy and cannot be run as some form of competition to seperate candidates from each other.
The trail is entirely voluntary and you should not be pressurised to do it.
A trial has to be agreed between the JCP and the company. There are usually conditions imposed by the JCP that subsistence and travelling expenses will be paid.
The fact that the WT person is not available is nonsense, any advisor should be able to find this information out for you with a quick phone call.
Postal signing is part of the guidance for work trails if you are unable to come into sign due to the hours worked.
Refusal of being issued with a leaflet on WT is very poor customer services - something which the JC should be striving to achieve - they have their own internal targets on this.
All in all quite an amazing carry on...====================================================

This goes from bad to worse !
As there have been no "me too" posts I guess it's fair to assume this is a one off situation with one rogue store and not general Tesco policy. Not that makes it right !!I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

The work trial will be 15 days and during that time you will still collect your JSA and you will be given an additional allowance for travelling and lunch (in Birmingham this is £3 for the bus fare and £3 for lunch), you need to collect this from the jobcentre on a weekly basis as they will give you a giro.
You do not sign off whilst you are on the work trial and at the end of it there is no obligation for you to stay on, you can say that the work wasn't for you and give a reason why. If you elect to stay after the 15 day work trial then you must sign off the dole and they will give you a one-off payment of £100 as a goodbye gift.

This is what I was told in my area, and also you could leave and if it wasn't the right job for you.
I think they give you extra help when you start work after the interview.

This is just another reason to avoid tesco.
http://www.tescopoly.org/
I do use them sometimes.......... usually when I am in a rush or the smaller independent shops have closed.
Last time I was in there somebody tried to persuade me to use the self service till. I made it clear that I wanted a person to serve me as the area needed more jobs not less. Of course now I realise that the person on the till may not be being payed anyway.
I'm going to stick to the local farmers market and smaller local shops. After all if a local grocer exploits the scheme he probably needs to to stay afloat... I don't want to give the 'haves' more.
I know Tesco are not going to miss me or my few pennies but hey... it makes me feel a little better.
I did a yts scheme - I was in a library in the days when the books had little tickets inside the cover. My job was to remove each little brown ticket and replace with a little white ticket. Copying all those tickets out used a lot of ink and one day my pen ran out and I had to sit and wait while they went to the shop to get me another one as they didn't want me using one of their 'proper' pens. I had a bic. After the 6 months were up I didn't get a proper job as I hadn't finished the task so they got another girl in. She wasn't kept on either.
Things haven't changed much have they?1 -

Nice to see the media taking an interest in this (and mentioning MSE)
James O'Brien just mentioned it and said they will be going back to covering it later this morning. LBC radio 97.3 FM (or on Sky & Virgin as well as listen on-line https://www.lbc.co.uk if anyone wants to listenI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

This cannot be allowed - it's not only exploitation of the people involved but also is undermining the regular job market. Don't those on minimum wage have enough to contend with without competing with free labour!!!MSE PARENT CLUB MEMBER.ds1 nov 1997ds2 nov 2007:jFirst DDFirst DD born in june:beer:.1

I have to agree that Jobcentreplus actually has very strict guidelines in place that any vacancy they advertise has to be for a genuine available position with a proper start date (this was largely a problem with agencies advertising made up jobs to get more applications to register with them)- so in this situation you really do need to take this further to the manager or it needs to be brought to the attention of your local vacancy manager (this is the person who is responsible for liaising between the jobcentre, employer direct and the employers using the jobcentres in your area).A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0
