Considering Tesco's profits, it seems an amazingly Scrooge-like way to operate. I guess that is how they make humungous profits.

There's a difference between a trial for an actual job, that exists, and you are the final chosen candidate for... and exploitation. Isn't there?

I guess with the Crunch, Britain's headed for third-world status, and we can expect to see working conditions adjusted accordingly.

The worst thing is that Tesco is a dreadful place to work and worktrials are supposed to be for you AND the employer to trial the job, this is all one way, where is your choice to say yes it was great I'll take the job, its disgusting and I'm so mad on your behalf.

If you do the Work Trial, take in a placard, walk up & down by the checkouts:

I guess the plus side is that you get work experience which you can tell to protential employer as "Christmas work" but I totally see all your points, it's a bit much that you are not getting paid any extra really for doing this especially at this time of year?

It's utterly cynical and abusive on the part of Tesco. They're disgusting.

Interesting if someone with an underlying medical condition dropped dead while being worked like a horse without pay over the Christmas period. I wonder what their family would get in court?

Considering Tesco won't have paid them one red cent, would their employer's insurance cover it, or would they have to pay out the same as if it was a customer?

Out of curiosity, has anyone actually contacted the press with this thread? I'm fairly sure Polly Toynbee at The Guardian would be very interested in this story.

  • i have been on incapacity for 7 months after loosing my job and being diagnosed with (IBD) now i have just been told on a Friday afternoon i have to start a work trial on Saturday at 2 o'clock ......well that spoilt my weekend thanks asda ...all i can say is i will do my best but how do i start a job being labeled as having a disability and having to impress everyone for 15 day's well i don't feel confident at all .......bloody demoralising and it is only a cleaning job .......the best thing i can do is share my experience and let you know what happens after 15 days .....

    up date

been doing free work for asda now for 1 week but the cleaning company is not asda but another company within asda (prefer not to say who at this moment) ..i was told the hours where 2 -6 but when i got there i was told the hours i was on trial for was 2-10 so i was forced in to work 2-10 no option .mt first week and worked 6 days without a day off ...8 hour shift and half an hour break very generous
