Are Work Trials compulsory

I dont believe tesco would take on trialists over the christmas period0

I see in the Evening Standard that Tesco is in trouble about slave workers so what's new they are having free workers for over Christmas  I wonder just how many out of work people will be conned this year by Tesco doing work trials for jobs that don't exist.
Up the people Down with legalised slavery0 -
DCFC79; It is completely true, i have the proof here in black and white.0

Mentioning black and white to a Derby fan is a bad idea
I have recently been on benefits myself, it was Incapacity Benefit due to illness but could have easily been JSA. If I had this put in front of me, that of doing a 42 hour week for effectively nothing - I would flatly refuse.
I urge you to do the same, and I am sure many MSE'ers would help you through any consequences of doing so, myself included.0 -
At the risk of being shot down in flames...
The DSS have been giving the job seekers £50+ a week for X amount of weeks for nothing, so the idea of doing a weeks work for that same £50 is quite a good one IMHO, but three is taking the mickey, especially as they have no intention of keeping the staff on.
Would be better that they have an interview first, and do a weeks work at £50 or maybe a months trial at minimum wage or something.
I think work trials are a great idea though. We've taken on a lad who seemed great at interview but is completely useless!
My husband is a chef and a working interview is normal, its the only way you can see how someone would fit in the team. It is normal to be paid though.1 -
Dobbie, I do agree with you, and I'm not saying I don't want to do a work trial. My only complaint is that I haven't and won't be offered an interview unless I complete the whole three weeks; and I applied for the job a couple of months ago, yet despite asking if I could undertake the trial a month earlier was denied this. Tesco (the store in question) wants the candidates to do the trial over christmas and new year. They are not taking on temporary staff for this period. The jobcentre has confirmed that there is no guarantee of a job offer at the end; only an interview. I am waiting to hear back form a formal complaint I made.1

Well done:T for offering to undertake a trial for 3 weeks, earlier or otherwise for less than the minimum wage:eek:. I am so pleased that you have made a fomal complaint :A let's see how long it takes them to replyIt will probably be in the New Year and
you would not have had to work your b*t off for a job that doesn't exsist:D while job seeking after working 40 hours a week, running a household and being a sex goddess:D . I hope that you find an employer living in this world and not Disneyland;) XRemember every waking moment is a chance to turn it all around.;) Knowledge is the key to respect.
