I also want to point out (in agreement with the very strangeness regarding interviewing after work trial), how on earth will they know that the people they are giving these work trials to don't have for example a history of shoplifting or history of being sacked from jobs for gross misconduct issues????

Also from a legal standpoint I'd be very interested to know how the issue stands regarding working on bank holidays, and religious festival days, especially as many people now have to agree to contracts to work saturdays and bank holidays, but you wouldn't be a contacted member of staff..
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

What utter rubbish Bozo-I could solicit you for <insert your vice of choice> but you'd still be wrong if you accepted the offer. In the same way no-one is forcing Tesco to do this. They choose to do it (which I have no problem with in general principle) at the busiest time of the year when there will be staff free to train, assess or support these supposed prospective employees (which I DO object to). It *is* exploitation and using the recession as an excuse to do so doesn't make it any more acceptable

As a taxpayer i object to a company as large as Tesco being able to subsidise it's labour requirement with what is in affect our money. It strikes me as not unreasonable to at the least expect them to bear the benefit costs of that person for the period they work for them. It would still be cheaper than normally employing them.

From the OP's point of view i can see why he is not too happy about all this. As others have suggested the chances of employment after this period do look slim.

Whoever negotiates these things in the DWP has taken a good idea in principle and ruined it.

Well |I work fore a supper market were every little helps and they are not suppose to take on any part time or full time workers over the Christmas period but they are having job seekers work trials going on for three weeks over Christmas ?

Here's another reason to avoid Tesco.

The clock is ticking on this inept Labour government.

I know how special christmas is with family. But to me, doing something that could lead to a job and off benefits would be more important. Your family would understand this.

......Bozo, I understand that you're trying to see the good in the situation and in any other circumstance I would agree with you, and I'm taking a stab that the OP would too.

However, this looks a little different. It looks as if there will be NO JOB after the trial period. As the OP and also a Tesco employee have stated, the company has made it clear that they will not be taking on their regular influx of Christmas temps in order to save money, instead they will be using Work Trial folk. It seems pretty clear to me that this is simply Tesco getting people to work until Christmas, and then offloading them all straight away. It stinks, to be honest.

I can't see any merit in blaming the government for this though, daveboy. Until 10 minutes ago I'd never heard of it, but it looks like a good system when it is used properly. This is clearly abuse of the system though, and Sir Terry Leahy should hang his head in shame.

I do blame the Government, as all the big companies can get away with what they like.

Maybe it's just me that thinks companies like Tesco and Sky (to name but two) have the Government firmly in their pocket.

As I said, in less than two years this Government will be dead anyway.

I would wonder about Employer's insurance liability for these work placements too - as they are not "employees" would they be covered?

Exactly-just like the YTS scheme -good in principle but abused in practice failed due to employer abuse of a good scheme.

  • I am utterly shocked by this, my mum works for the supermarket in question and has nothing but praise for them but this is disgusting, it wouldn't be as bad if they paid minimum wage whilst on the trial but to work 15 days on what £50 a week is disgusting!
