Are Work Trials compulsory

Would be good to name the company concerned here.0

I'd give that supermarket a two word reply. Exploiting people who are unemployed during the season of good-will is pretty disgraceful imo.
For what it is worth, I think that the OP should undertake the work trial, but should make a high level complaint to the regional office of the Job Centre and refer the matter to a [preferably Tory] MP.After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -
Are you really that naive?
What?
Expecting people on benefits to do a trial that could lead to a perm job and not have to rely on benefits?
Try out a job for 15 days (yes only 15 days) to see if its for you with no loss of benefits?
Expecting people to at least try an introduction to the world of work and get paid travel to and from the employer?
Thinking its great that the government are cutting through red tape and getting employers on board to get people into work?
Thinking that in the current economic climate job seekers would jump at the chance to prove themselves to a employer?
Perhaps I am being naive.

Three weeks in a supermarket, over Christmas for nothing is slave labour and the company concerned will know that.
Have you got any idea how much work/product there will be over these three weeks?
This company should be named and shamed...it really wouldn't surprise me if it is Sainsbury's.0 -

Its 15 days. Ok, perhaps the busiest 15 days in the year for a supermarket, but 15 days none-the-less.
Look at this way, if you can handle those 15 days, the rest of the year in a walk in the park. To qualify for a Work trial you have to have been on the dole for 6 months, surely its worth a try?
If your single, your next relationship might come from it. If you have no freinds, perhaps your next freindship might come of it. Its what you make of it.
I got a flyer from the DSS about work trials, I can't take them up on it as I have to CRB everyone, but I tell you what, my company would try it.
Remember the 6 month placements they used to do for a tenner extra a week? THAT was slave labour, this is different, its a hope, a chink of light.

supermarket taking the mick of JSA
The JSA is actively seeking and soliciting firms to be a part of this. I know because I have had the flyer!when they would normally take on casual staff
I accept that point to a degree.

Do the state not get any money back from the employer ??0

Was the work trial clearly stated when you applied for the vacancy?
If not then although the JC could attempt to take DMA for refusal of employment the Decision Maker would find in your favour. However if the trial was clearly stated as part of the recruitment process you would be on rocky ground.
I also wonder if this job was advertised as part of the Local Employer Partnerships? Under this scheme certain groups are guaranteed an interview, but may have to for example complete a work trial to obtain the interview. They are aimed at returning to work 'harder to help' customers...====================================================
