Fake "postives" are possible as sometimes there can be a shadow along where the line is which can look like a ery faint positive. If you're looking hard enough then it can look enough like a postive even though in reality it's not. I know of a particular test which does this which can be very confusing/upsetting. After about 10 mintues, this actually forms an actual line which can make things even worse.

    Hope you're okay.

    What brand is that?

Also, it's important to only take note of the results within the time frame specified on the test info sheet/box, as evaporation lines can appear after a while, rendering the test void - hence I have bought cheap pee on a stick tests AND a couple of Clearblue Digital ones - there's no misreading 'pregnant' on a screen! ;)

It's the ASDA own brand ones. I know (now!) for absolute certain that I wasn't pregnant but was still getting a line. It does state on the instructions that a line can form after ten minutes, but I think that after five minutes (when it tells you to read the test), that that line can be starting to form. I know it sounds nuts, but sometimes if you are really desperate to see that line, any shadow/marking can appear to look like one.

I completely agree about using different tests. This is the only brand I've had problems with (but then again it's the same brand that I used to correctly test for 4 of my 5 pregnacies.....so go figure ;))

I do know what you mean about the 'shadow', when I come to think about it - the ov sticks I use have a different sheen on the place where the control and test lines should appear (you have to REALLY squint at them, but it's there), which is why sometimes you can see a faint 'line' when you angle them to the light.

I found some info on here: http://peeonastick.com/hptfaq.html
    7. What's an evaporation line? Evaporation ("evap") lines result with the test's antibody strip just looks slightly different than the space around it. There is a line of antibodies (usually made from mouse cells) in the Control and Test section. The Control line binds with any liquid and turns pink (or blue, in tests using blue dye.) The Test/Result line turns pink only if pregnancy hormone is detected. If not, the moisture passes over this strip and does not turn pink. It may, however, become more visible when the light hits the moisture on the strip-- it may appear gray, colorless, like a "dent" in the test, or like a "ghost line." It may appear at any time-- as soon as the urine hits it, after a few minutes as the test absorbs the moisture, or after the 10-minute time limit. It may appear when the test is drying, or after it has dried. It may disappear as the test is drying, or after the test has dried, or not disappear at all.
The simple fact is that there is always "something there" that is slightly visible-- it's simply the antibodies on the test that would turn pink in the presence of hCG. When the test becomes wet, or as it dries, or after it dries, the antibody strip may become more visible. Therefore, all tests may have them. It is not a defect; it's just how tests are made.
A real positive is identified by its color (pink or blue, whatever the color of the test's dye is) and its appearance within 10 minutes of urinating on the stick. A line that appears after 10 minutes, regardless of color, must be considered an evap line and is caused by the test's chemicals changing. HPT's are rapid assay diagnostics, which means any results appearing after the "rapid" time limit of 10 minutes are invalid.

Well I never! Honestly, I'm learning new stuff every day with this ttc lark! :rotfl:

I went to the doctors and she did a test which came back negative.

She couldn't tell me if I had miscarried or not and was pretty useless so I'm none the wiser all I know is that if I was pregnant I'm not now!!

I believe that if a woman miscarries then the hormone creating the positive result stays in the body for up to a few weeks, so if this had happened to you then the result would still have been positive. The hormone wouldn't exit your body that fast to give a negative result at this time. So I'd be inclined to say that it was a negative all along.

Doctors tests aren't as sensitive as the ones you can purchase yourself.

I'd maybe wait a couple of weeks and re test, if you are pregnant there will be more hormone to detect and you should get a much clearer positive result. If you've miscarried then the hormone will have left your body and should show up a negative result.
Good luck, hope you finally! get the result you want x

  • I would get another test such as the oens that deteact early or say pregnant/not pregnant/ If it still says pregnant, then wait, many people have had periods and carried their pregnancy.

Depends if there was only a low level of HCG present for the home tests - the OP did say it was a faint line on them. If the level was only low when tested, and then continued to drop, that could explain it, as it may have dropped below the point it would show up on the test at the docs - a quantitative blood test would have shown the exact level of HCG present. I'm guessing Oliversmummy did a POAS test at the docs (?), which would explain why she was told it couldn't be confirmed that she had miscarried or not.

Thanks for that ;) (I knew it wasn't just me going mad lol)

I think the problem with the ASDA tests is that the positve test line is actually a light purple colour so the grey evaporation line can look a little similar as colour is faintly mauve/ish. The clear blue tests are ovbiously bright blue in colour so there's obviously less room for error.

Anyway, this is all not really interesting to oliversmummy Iguess, but what I was trying to say initially is that you may not have had a failed pregnancy......tests can sometimes be a little confusing no matter how well you follow the instructions. I don't know if this offers any comfort or not, but perhaps it may help.

I have had 2 false positives - a line appeared - very faint both times but I wasn't convinced I was pg and then had a period very soon after. That was using clearblue tests which I thought were meant to be most accurate.

Looking back they were probably evaporation lines. The next time I used ones that showed a dot rather than a line! I lost faith in the 'line' ones!!

I think it could be likely it was an early miscarriage. When I miscarried at 6 1/2 weeks, they did a scan and blood test because I had pains. The blood test came back as negative for pregnancy but I didn't start bleeding until later that afternoon - and that was like a very heavy period.
I think this is the downside of the early pregancy tests we have now, so many times the egg doesn;t impant properly and you get a positive and then it goes away. In the old days you didn't know.
