DLA Scoliosis Daughter Help

Hi all,

I was wondering if you can help, My daughter has severe scoliosis at 50 degrese and she cannot walk far as she either falls over or complains about her back, I applied for DLA earlier in the month as she also has an underactive thyroid, she has been given growth hormones to see if they help. Had call from DLA day before yesterday confirming details were correct. is this a good sign?????

  • To be honest i don't think it is a good or bad sigh. DLA is nortoriously hit and miss. Alot depends on how much supporting evidence you send in with the claim and how obvious the care /mobility needs are. I have an indefinate award and have been reviewed 3 times(including medicals) yet my son has the same condition and no supporting evidence(i had lots) but got an indefinate award on his paper claim alone. I was very surprised as he sent in no evidence and i always say send in as much as you can to avoid long delays and rejection. Sorry not much help but wanted to reply.

Many Thanks Scooby1001, We have mentioned that she is going to be going for an MRI scan to see when the operation will be needed. She has been for a CT scan to check how far the spine is curved. Her Pedriatrician has recomended us to fill in the forms and claim DLA which is what we have done so just waiting for a reply now from them people :).

Just an update, I called them this morning and i was asked what rate of care am i recieving. I mentioned that i didnt think that they had made a decision? In the next breath i was told that the forms are still with the DM. Sorry to be a pain but is this what normally happens ?

Still nothing.... its a long wait :)
  • I first applied for DLA for my son back in June, and it never got sorted until October.

Got it all back dated though so that was ok.

Hiya is your daughter braced or in a plaster jacket? My middle son (14)has scoliosis he was braced for nearly 5 years and has just undergone a surgery to have growth rods inserted as the brace wasn't holding the curve.
His first award was low rate care when braced for 23hrs a day,he also wears a leg brace and orthotics in his shoes, due to other probs. The award usually goes on the care needs rather than the actual diagnosis so try to explain what extra help she needs and how it affects her daily life, rather than the condition itself good luck :D

    Edit
forgot to ask how old she is?

Hia, No she is not in a plaster, going to the hospital in Jan for a decision to when they are going to operate as they are really concerned, she has the scoliosis which they are concerned about because she cannot walk hardly because she is in pain. She is only 2 yrs old though but she says "Baddies" if she falls over (due to lack of balance) then points to her back. As i mentioned she cannot walk far at all and she falls over all the time, she also has an overactive thyroid and is really small for her age. Hope this helps.

    Regards

aw bless her,my son is a 'tumbler' too :D
I know of a couple of people whose daughters had infantile scoliosis, they were both in plaster jackets til recently now have both got growth rods in too I don't think they like to fuse that young??
I think it depends which specialist you are referred to..have they referred to a scoliosis specialist or a general orthopaedic surgeon?
Make sure you take a list of questions with you when you go as your mind tends to go blank once you're in there..or maybe thats just me:rotfl:
