Sharpening knives

Does anyone know a cheap old style way of sharpening knives? I need to sharpen up a penknife.
Thanks!

I've done them on the concrete paver that is my back door step before now. Just moisten an area at the edge and have at it.

Edit: I've finally tracked down my favourite handy sharpener on line :)

That is how they used to sharpen knives in the old days. People in the Welsh valleys commonly used to sharpen their carving knife on the snow-white front door step, on a sunday before the roast dinner. A friend told me about when her mum was really hard up so that she could not afford a joint, she still sharpened her knife so that the neighbours would never know

Hi, i used to be a chef so i still have my old steel for sharpening my knives, but a paving stone/slab is the cheapest alternative i think. Hold the sharp side of the knife at a 45% angle to the edge of the stone and quickly drag it back towards you then repeat on the other side. Alternate sides and it should only take you a few strokes.

I have an Ikea knife sharpener which cost me about £4...

Having said that, I'm not sure how suitable it would be for penknives, but it does a splendid job on my kitchen knives. I liked it because it was a bit safer than the standard sharpeners (although what's safe about knife sharpening, I'll never know! :))

There`s nothing more dangerous than a cheap/blunt knife. A good quality SHARP knife will cut without having to force or put to much pressure on the item in question. Also, ALWAYS cut away from you
  • I have a nice (non-mse) set of Global knives (10 of them :P), i hope they dont need sharpening for a little while yet!
