Sharpening knives

I got a steel when I left home and got a good set of knives almost 20 years ago-no point having decent knives if they're not sharp!0

I agree with the point that sharp knives are safer - and continually try to explain this to family and friends who are scared of sharp knives! I also had to explain to my ex-OH that keeping knives in a drawer is a bad idea as you can put your hand in and cut yourself. He seemed to think that with kids about (10 & 16????) that keeping them out in a block was mor dangerous...
Crikey. I've kept my knives in a block on the worksurface since the kids were about....six? I gathered them round, explained that the chicken on the chopping board was the same sort of thing that their hands were made of then showed them what kind of damage they could do to flesh with mum's knives. Neither of them will so much as touch the knives unless I'm in the kitchen with them, and they're 9 and 14 now.
But if your Hubby insists, how about keeping the block in a cupboard somewhere?Val.0 -
How do you sharpen bread knives? We have steels and sharpen other knives with them but have no idea how this applies to bread knives. Also we have two different edges on our 2 knives. One is the usual serrated/scalloped edge and the other is more like a hacksaw blade with the occasion solid piece.
So any ideas?
TIA.
I have searched OS but couldn't find bread knife instructions - unless you mods have your super links?Put the kettle on.0 -
Sorry, but I don;t know either
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to see if that gives you more ideas.

Hi,
My initial thoughts were its probably not possible to sharpen a serrated knife. Some googling suggests that it is possible, but you'd have to do each serration individually. Getting something small enough for the iny serrations would be tricky, perhaps the very corner of a small whetstone?

now I am really showing my ignorance here..........can all knives be sharpened. I am sure when I bought mine years ago they said.... never need sharpening again.... which was a bit of a fib actually!!! but they are all a bit dull it has to be said. I may go for the ikea thingif you can0

My late father was a carpenter and sharpened his saws with a small file type thingy...might work for bread knife although I have never had to sharpen mine.
I use a sharpening stone for my knives but am now wondering if a steel would be better....but I have a stone and it works well, so I can't justify spending money on a steel

I had this problem the other day as my bread knife had gone quite blunt. I'd read that you could sharpen a knife on the unglazed base of a mug or plate, so I did this on the unserrated side of my bread knife, and it worked a treat!0
