What would stop cats using the garden as a toilet?

The only successful technique I ever found was Bob Flowerdew's idea:
give them a sand pit and clean out regularly. Cats are inherently lazy and like easy to dig and clean places. So if you provide them with a sandpit it becomes a cat latrine and keeps the rest of your garden clean.

My garden was host to many cats when I first moved in. It didn't take me long to work out the main attraction was an out-sized catmint plant and was soon dug out! It didn't cure the problem straight away and was really amusing to watch the cats frantically searching for it, lol!!
Anyway, being creatures of habit, they normally use the same entry/exit points so where possible, put up grease bands (or something similar) as cats just hate to get their paws mucky and won't tread on it. They also hate reflective things so strategically placed tin foil attached to string deters them also.0 -
Friend of mine says don't leave any empty spaces around the plants. Clear the soil where they poo and then put empty plant pots upside down or else plant ground cover plants. I have a dog/prickly hedge/lavender plants and I still got cat poo but I tried this (ground cover/extra plants)and they didn't seem to return. It does look a bit strange though! ....from doing their 'business' in my front garden ?!?
Is there a product that works well ? Anything that someone has tried ? Maybe an 'oldstyle' remedy ?!?
My front garden has borders, which I've put some bark down onto, as it should (hopefully) stop the weeds. Now, I was aware that the local cats seemed to like to do their 'business' in my front garden, but thought that the bark would stop them - sadly not !
Are cats creatures of habit ? Am I stuck with this problem for ever ?
Many, many thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas. It's not a major problem to me, but would be good to resolve.
(I had a really good look around the site to see where this post should go - sorry if this is in the wrong section - please move it to the right one if I've made a mistake posting it here)0 -
Have you tried orange peel or pieces of tin foil?? Some of my friends have tried that and it has worked.

The contents of a used teabag I'm told does the trick.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I had this problem earlier this year. I gravelled the front garden to avoid having to cut the lawn, but it turned into a giant litter tray! The suggestions were:
Chilli powder - fairly cheap if you buy big bags from an ethnic foodstore. Seems to have worked
Any citrus peel - cats don't like the smell apparently.
Lion poo - handy if you live near a zoo!
Gripper-rods & or a large water pistol were also suggested!0 -

Tried and tested deterrent is fresh garlic. All you need to do is clean the area then sprinkle finely chopped garlic aroung your plants, pots, lawn etc.
Cats hate fresh garlic and they will not use treated areas as litter trays...I did my last treatment about 6 months ago and no cats been back.
Make sure you chop the garlic as small as possible.0
