  • All you people that are complaining about these charges that can be avoided are going to push ryanair to charge everyone more, the ryanair customers with visa electron cards are happy... and guess what visa electron cards are free and easy to get... so stop complaining, get a card, carry less, print your own boarding pass, and keep quiet!

Ryanair basically sell seats so that say the first 50 customers to book will get their flight for £1 and then the price goes up and up until the day of the flight.

This to me is a good idea. Why shouldn't people who book early be rewarded for doing so? Michael O'Leary is an absolute legend to me! He can get publicity for anything and then as soon as it's announced people are on MSE discussing it...and then their bookings go up as a result. It's brilliant, very underhand, but brilliant.

People should be more thankful they have an option to be able to fly for £1, if you want to take extra luggage or have priorty boarding thats your perogative and you pay extra. For us that don't (and it really isn't the complex maths puzzle everyone is making it out to be) and book using Ryanair's rules...were having a great time and getting to see more places than we could imagine for £1!

Well this post certainly got a response didn't it!! I do have to agree with Martin on the following points though....
I make no apology for calling for payment and checking in to be inclusive costs. I note that the earlier posters - obviously experienced board regulars are those saying "no problem". Yet read down some of the comments - clearly others do find it difficult. The "jump all the hurdles" approach is wrong.

The credit and debit card charges are nothing short of extoriton. Yes you can get a Visa Electron, but that is not the point. I'd be happy to pay with my credit card and pay a little bit extra for the priveledge; if I felt it was relative to the costs incurred. But charging per person per sector is outrageous it bares no relevance to the cost incurred by the airline and is blatant profiteering. (And this applies to ALL the low cost airline's, not just Ireland's favourite).

The check-in charge is also rediculous considering you have no option but to check in, you have to do it in order to use your ticket. It would be like buying a train ticket and then being charged £5 to get through the turnstyle onto the platform. Why oh why don't they just include it in the price (the headline price, the price you see before you click anything).

If I want to take luggage, fair enough I'll pay, if I'm stupid enough to not print my boarding passes then yes I'll pay, if I somehow think priority boarding is worth it, I'll pay and I accept all of that. But paying for something I have no choice in?!

They do though, if it says £1 flight sale, then the check in charge is included in that!

I fail to see any difference with Ryanair sale fares and any sale from any retailer who states 'from £X or upto X% off'.

I have flown 6 return trips with Ryanair over the last year and have not paid more than £10 for the privilige.

OK miles of postings from both sides of the debate - my stance is slightly different.
The "bargain" airfares are symptomatic of a wider malaise. We used to value customer care, we will now use the cheapest we can find for any service then complain when our support call is on premium rate to an overseas call centre who can only answer from their script.

The cost of providing a flight to anywhere is substantially more than £1 - fuel, ROI, aircrew etc. If there were 200 passengers flying to wherever all paying £1 the carrier would be losing money hand over fist so we know the aim must be to charge more, therfore the £1 headline price is misleading. Were the advertiser acting with integrity then the advertised price would bear some relation to what, on average, people will end up paying.

A couple of points about your post.

You're right we do care more about cost than customer service, thats why local shops are disappearing, personally I'm not fussed about the personal service I get from Arkwright if im paying double for my tin of beans therefore I shop at tesco's

Another point Ryanir do not sell the whole flight at £1 x 200 seats, as previously mentioned, the first "x" amount of seats are a quid then the rest rise sharply and the make a real killing on holding back a few seats for last minute buyers.

One other consideration is the amount of money ryanair make on freight, the same as virtually everyother airline, and of course the money made on in flight services, there is a reason a 200ml bottle of coke is £2.

I've flown many times return from Leeds Bradford to Dublin, for less than £10 each way. have also got quite a few £1 each way, and twice managed to bag the bargain 1p each way flights.

Regarding Only being able to take hand luggage, as well as making sure your bag isn't too heavy you need to ensure it is small enough to be classed as hand luggage. This website sells bags that are the EXACT dimensions of RyanAirs hand luggage restrictions so i can maximise the amount of clothes i take. - http://www.flylite.uk.com

I also wear my heavy clothes (jeans, shoes, coat etc) on the plane and not put it in my hand luggage. Just gives me that little bit extra.

There is a simple way to avoid Ryanair robbery: don't ever use that airline. I never have and never will.

I live 10 miles from Luton Airport. I occasionally go to Dublin. If you can suggest a quicker and cheaper way to get there then I'm listening.

In the meantime I'll continue to use Ryanair, because I can use the interweb, I can read, I can do basic arithmetic, and I'm not interested in cutting off my nose to spite my face. I guess that Ryanair's silly games must catch out a few dopes, but really their tricks are so transparent they just make me laugh.

I am amazed at the number of people who seem to think that the hidden extras approach by the airlines is an acceptable way of doing business.

I agree entirely with Martin on this one, be upfront.

It shouldn't be necessary for people wanting to purchase an air line ticket or any other product or service as a consumer to have to wade through masses of small print, exceptions, additions, and have the skills something akin to a forensic bookkeeper, detective, mathamatician, lawyer, and internet savy geek.

In addition to what I see as the imorality of the 'hidden and misunderstand, get it wrong at your peril approach' we are in danger or creating different levels of society and depriving less technically minded and astute people from benefits we ourselves can enjoy, accept or at least cope with. What happens when the astute become less capable as age and infirmity takes over .. our society is already too much dog eat dog, every man for themselves and the devil take the hindemost.

:j totally debt free, only every day bills, always pay the credit card off in full every month ( except when the other half once misread an 8 in 800 for 5 and only paid the lesser amount !!! - phew - that really brought home how much those who don't pay in full shell out each month ) and money in the bank ( as Mum taught me RIP ) for that rainy day when the roof wants repairing.
