I have both types at home (one was 'lost' in my food cupboard for a week or so :rotfl:) and I used the ball one by mistake the other day - still turned out ok thank goodness but I would have normally done the warm water and sugar thing first. Ah well, as they say if it ain't broke.....;)

How long did you leave the dough for the first rise? Or did you leave that bit out and shape them into rolls straight away?

A couple of ways of dealing with this, both tried and tested.By me :)

    1) If you have one of those dish warmer things that you put tea lights in you can put the tin/tray onto that. A fair result.

    2) If you have an electric blanket on your bed, put the tin/tray on that. Cover the tray with one of those meat safe things (like net umbrellas) and cover the whole lot with the duvet. Works a treat. :)

Then there's the "cover and sit it on top of the fishtank, thing, and let the lights keep it warm" but this takes a while.

And fnally there's the "let the cat sleep on it" one but it's a right pain getting all the cat hair out of the dough ;)

The third, and most low tech way, is time :D It's a myth that yeast needs warmth to work - if it's still active, dough will rise given a few hours (see my post of earlier today), so long as your house isn;t arctic ;) Give the dough a few hours for the first rise, shape as desired, and it should rise a treat, without external heating :)

  • There was only the 1 rise, it was quick rolls. They didn't rise as much as I thought they would (I left them to rise 4/5hours before popping in the oven) but they still tasted ok and got eaten for dinner yippee!!

Thanks for all your help everyone, might try the bread today although I'm feeling I spend SO much time iin the kitchen and therefore my cookie stash has reduced dramatically overnight to the point where there's only 1 left :O

    Yep! :)

I've even had dough rise while left in the fridge overnight.

But if you've just made some dough and your house is cold, and you'd like some bread today... ;)

    Edit:- Forgot! Airing cupboard!! :)

If possible, I make mine in the evening and leave it overnight in the fridge; it's fighting to get out of the bowl by the morning.
Or, if you want it within a few hours, you can make a "proving oven" by putting a dish of boiling water on the floor of the oven, then placing the bowl of yeast dough (covered with cling film) on the next shelf above that. Gives the same effect as a hot room.

Never heard of this before - I usually have to wait until the heating comes on or I'm cooking something else before I leave my bread to rise. My kitchen makes the arctic seem toasty. :D Thank you Horsechestnut :D
