Surely a min call charge only applies when you make a short call to the 0844 number. EG. Mobile Engaged,Hit Voicemail,Out of range, short call. If you make say a longer call say 6 minutes you would only be charged 6p for the whole call.(1p a minute).

That depends on your service provider. Some providers may charge a connection fee, and then a minimum charge too. Not all service providers emulate BT's tariff for 0844.

What provider other then a cable one would charge a connection fee to dial 0844 numbers.?

The only service provider i am aware of that does not emulate BT,s 0844 tariff is Onetel who charge 10% more then BT .

    Hi Steve_xx

Sorry i dont think i have answered my own question. You said i quote

"Some providers may charge a connection fee, and then a minimum charge too."

I out of interest asked you. " What provider other then a cable one would charge a connection fee to dial 0844 numbers.?"

How does the fact thay i go on to say that OneTel have a different call charge tariff for 0844 to other providers answer this? Yes they operate a different tariff and a minimum call call charge of 4.8p but no connection charge.

I have never seen any UK Landline supplier charging both a connection, and a
minimum call charge ,one or the other but not both ,hence my interest .

Here is a sample of a statement of Onetels tariffing for 0844:

"Rates and comparisons correct as at 15/7/2005. Some calls will attract both a per-minute and a per-call charge (the per-call charge is a one-off connection charge and the per minute charge is billed based on the duration of the call). Peak calls are made between 8am to 6pm weekdays. Off Peak calls are made between 6pm and 8am weekdays. Weekend calls are made between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday. Calls are billed per second and a minimum call charge of 4.8p applies to all chargeable calls."

Thereby indicating that the call can indeed attract a connection/setup charge, a minimum charge and a rate per minute charge. Frustratingly, Onetel do not go on to specify which calls will or will not attract connection/setup charges, nor do they specify here what the connection charge is for this particular call type. One is left to assume these things.

I'm not sure I read into that what you have Steve_xx but, in any case, I'm glad I've ditched OneTel.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Let's assume that the three charge types I mentioned are applicable to an 0844 call. We know that Onetel have a minimum charge of 4.8p per call, we know that they could charge a connection setup fee which let's assume is 2p. Then we know that there is a per minute rate for an 0844 call, let's assume it's 1p.

Therefore for a 1 minute call to an 0844 number you would/may incur:

    2p setup charge
    4.8p minimum charge
you would not incur the 1p per minute charge here because you are still within the minimum charge
    = cost of call 6.8p

This would remain the same for a call lasting just short of 5 minutes. For every minute thereafter you would add 1p.

It's not quite as bad as it may first appear, particularly on a lengthy call, but it is a prima facia example of multiple charging for a single telephone call.

Having now had a chance to look more closely at their pricing list. The calls that both attract a per minute and a connection charge seem to be in the premium rate range
    0911020 etc etc. Not 0844.

BT charge for calls to this code at their g3 rate (Calls to Multimedia Services). It is a fixed fee, regardless of duration, of 10.21p (ex VAT), or approximately 12p (inc VAT) at all times. In addition

...........but it does say on their 0844 tariff:

"Rates and comparisons correct as at 15/7/2005. Some calls will attract both a per-minute and a per-call charge (the per-call charge is a one-off connection charge and the per minute charge is billed based on the duration of the call). Peak calls are made between 8am to 6pm weekdays. Off Peak calls are made between 6pm and 8am weekdays. Weekend calls are made between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday. Calls are billed per second and a minimum call charge of 4.8p applies to all chargeable calls."

So, have you seen it elsewhere on their site where it says that the multiple charging is not applicable to 0844?
