No connection charge on BT .Call will be charged at 1p a minute from your BT Landline. But their is a minimum call charge of 5p approx if you make a short call, dont get through, hit voicemail etc.As you start paying when you hit recorded announcement when 0844 switch answers, before you dial final destination mobile number.0 -
Report from the field: I used DiscountDial to call a T-Mobile number this evening. No problems getting through, and good call quality.
This is the first time I've used secondary dialling, and I was expecting the kind of rubbish call quality that you get with some cheap phone cards. Not so - even a bat couldn't tell the difference! Well impressed.0 -
I've been using DiscountDial to call mobiles with no problems up to now (unlike Cleaverates which never worked for me). However today I received a message on DiscountDial saying something like calls to this country are not allowed from this number.
Is this a one off problem, or have they put up their price to call mobiles today? Their website still shows the price at 1p. Anyone else having problems?0 -

do you need to sign up to this service?? and how do you pay for the calls? via bt bill?0

No and yes.
Remember though you'll pay BT their minimum call charge as soon as you get through to the 0844 number.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Yeah thanks. I'm a bit slow this evening, and have since checked their webby.0

This is probably a silly question, but does the cost of this depend on which CPS one has? I currently have BT, but intend to change to Primus. Will it still be 1 p per min? And will there be a minimum call charge too - what if, say, you are calling at evenings/weekends when calls via primus are free?0

From the Discount Dial website:The charges for calls to our access numbers will simply appear on your normal telephone bill from your telephone provider (usually BT, Telewest or NTL).
For example, if you make a 5 minute call to Canada from a BT phone via access number 0844 861 60 60 which is charged at 1p/min; Next time you get your BT bill you will see a call to our 0844 861 60 60 number, a duration of 5 minutes and a total charge of 5 min x 1p = 5p.
Your service provider also usually charges a minimum charge or connection fee for each call; for example BT applies a 5p minimum charge. NTL charges a 5p connection fee and Telewest a 6p connection fee for 08 numbers and 10p for 09 numbers. For other networks please contact your service provider.
So, for example, my CPS is JustDial and a 4p charge appears on my bill with them for every call I make via Discount Dial.

Surely a min call charge only applies when you make a short call to the 0844 number. EG. Mobile Engaged,Hit Voicemail,Out of range, short call. If you make say a longer call say 6 minutes you would only be charged 6p for the whole call.(1p a minute).PF.0
