I've had to have my waters broken twice, maybe it will be 3rd time lucky this time and they will go on their own!
I think I'd be mortified if they gushed in public, I'd rather leak or gush at home thank you very much lolTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

I had a planned still birth, waters went in bed, which had plastic sheet under sheet. Put all the sheets in the washing machine before I went to hospital becaue I knew nobody else would and I didn't want to be reminded when I got home.
I can't imagine how difficult that must have been for you. I know you can't choose these things but I guess you must be a stong person to cope, your post suggests an element of that.
My sympathies are with you, recent or otherwise, I was upset to read what you went through.
Btw, I read on the yahoo news tonight about the baby that was flushed down the toilet, as I finished, DH walked in the door and I burst into tears all over him. Now I have my babies, I find any terrible baby stories quite distressing, Baby P for example. I couldn't bear to know the details and still don't, it would haunt me.0 -

I know what you mean. A few months ago I came across a book on the holocaust and flicking through it I saw a photo of a woman holding what looked like Joseph. It was taken just minutes before their end. I was in such a state for weeks afterwards!
Looby-loo, I cannot imagine having to go through that. Bless you.:wall:0 -
In my last job, my colleague's waters broke as she was perched on the end of my desk talking to me! She was mortified. She got a free lift to hospital (from me!) and I pinched the boss's mac for her to sit on to protect my car seat lol. The dept sent flowers but then we would've anyway. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

A friend of mine had her waters break while she was making a patients bed on the ward (8 weeks early). My other friend was nurse in charge and sent her to the maternity unit who wouldn't even examine her as she was booked into another hospital for the birth. So she went home picked her daughter up from preschool and then went up to the other hospital heavily in labour and had him a little while later that day.

With my 3rd child my waters went whilst I was walking my older children to school!!! I was really worried because I'd only had 30 minutes between my waters breaking and giving birth to my second child so I dropped them off as quickly as I could and made my way back to the bus stop where I met a friend who couldn't believe what had happened. Luckily I didn't have to hang around waiting too long for a bus and I got off at the maternity unit as it was on the way and I knew that was where I needed to be!!!!loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

One of my midwifery journals had a comment about these rumours especially the John Lewis one. They phoned JL and confirmed it was an urban myth .
We were advised to tell our 'ladies' not to try visiting shops when in labour as it could endanged both Mum and Baby. It seems some people try all sorts of things just to get a free trolley of shopping ! I think a baby is worth more than that!
If your waters go you need to be checked by a midwife, in hospital, unless you are planning a home delivery. If everything else seems normal you need to get a lift or a taxi in NOT an ambulance. It's not MSE when it costs the NHS £400 or more to get you to hospital !
If you're not sure discuss with your midwife what warrants calling an ambulance. There are some conditions when it is needed.
We are amazed at the number of people who arrive unneccesarily by ambulance as they have 'no other way to get in' then when they are sent home 'not in labour' or 'whatever' they manage to find someone to give them a lift within the click of a finger...... It's very very rare to find someone totally stranded.
OK rant over !

I can understand why women call ambulances to get to hospital when in labour though. The thought of going into labour scares the bejeezus out of me, and my OH works shifts and we don't have a car a the moment! What do you do?
What if you get a taxi driver who won't take you for fear of getting his cab gunky? Or if you can't get a taxi for an hour or two (which is often the case during rush hour where I live)? Maybe you can't get hold of a friend or relative on the phone? Perhaps you live 30 miles from the hospital, it's 2am, your waters break a week before your due date, your OH is away on business and a taxi would cost £50 you don't have until you get paid tomorrow! I can only imagine it could be very frightening. Do you get a non-emergency number to call for patient transport if this happens? Please someone, put my mind at rest!0
