Basically you need to encrypt your wireless by entering a long random password e.g. from here Save it to a notepad file and then copy and paste into the router (WPA or WPA2) and then into any device that you want to be able to connect to the router like the netbooks. You should also change the SSID (network name) to something unique from the default and also change the default router login password. Job done!

I think you may be jumping the gun a bit, there.

Not really as I thought that the plan was to get the new wireless routers wireless encryption set up, while still connected via USB to get any necessary help on here and then to do the switch over. Yes obviously the username/password will need to be entered before finally switching over but it's all explained in the user guide, which should be read along with any guidance given on here.

I suppose there are two options. Set up wireless, then switch from USB modem to wireless router or get the router online wired then set up the wireless network. My preference has always been the latter, but either way seems fine.

ok with that we gather you are wit talktalk then.. there routers dont come with wpa or wep thats someting u'l have to do ure self, but as far as adaptors go get something decent only £10 more than the other !!!! you can buy.. would say netgear or belkin in that order.. about £11.00 if you shop around.

If ya get a netgear they do unfortunatly require you to intall there useless software :mad: run the disk follow what it says and ure there smiles around...

This thread is frightening the life out of me!
I have just set my PC up with the main PC wired and the new laptop wifi. The router I got free from virgin thanks to this forum. I set it up with 'nearly' no problems!
So now I am the expert and setting up a friends on Tuesday.
Brought the adsl router with modem, because she is on TalkTalk, a Phillips from Tesco's[Brought from Tesco's because its just around the corner and I can take it back if I cannot get the bloody thing to work!]
I am just assuming that all the instructions are coming with it with a CD wizard.
All this talk about wep wap and other assorted 'W's' is a foreign language to me.
Hope someone will be around on Tuesday.

after throwing the router in the back of the wardrobe for four weaks :rolleyes:

i finally faced my nemesis and tried to install 'it' again......... with no luck ....

i accepted defeat........ and NEARLY..... went and bought a usb adaptor :eek: ...

but then................ phoned broadband company :eek: :eek: .......

after 45 mins and a very patient :rolleyes: techie bloke on other end of the blower ...

im online wiv me new wireless router ( but through the ethernet cable ) even tho the set up disk still cant detect the ethernet port :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

and the best thing is........ I did everything right ...... it were the rest of the basic settings that were wrong :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ........



just got to sort the netbooks out now :eek: :eek:

just might give them out next year

Reading the thread is was quite obvious that there was no connection there, so jumping the gun asking a novice to start setting up wireless security before there was even a connection there was not the best way to go forward..

Unless it was the intention to confuse them..

Basic settings probably not wrong, just not been entered for your ISP and you account name and password etc etc.
