What are you trying to achieve? Normally you keep one PC wired and any others e.g. laptops etc. connect via WiFi. USB dongles are not the best way to go wireless. Does your PC have an Ethernet port? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

You need a wireless adaptor. It's basically the aerial that picks up the signal from your wireless router.
USB ones are the easiest to install. This one's good. You can get cheaper ones but I don't have experience of them.0 -
should i keep to the same make as the wireless router or doesnt it make a difference if the make of the usb adaptor is different from the wireless router ??
(flippin ink..... if ya read that it reads as if i no wot im going on about )Heaven wont let me in & Hell's too scared i'd take over

It doesn't really matter whether the router and adaptor are the same brand. They'll still be able to talk to each other.
As already mentioned, if the PC is close enough to the router, then connecting via an ethernet cable (rather than wirelessly) is easier, and more secure. If, like at my house, the PC is in one room and the router's in another then wireless is probably the better solution.0 -
Basically, buy a wireless modem for your computer....usb for hassle free install.
No, it sounds like he needs a USB Wireless adapter (not a modem, which we think his ISP has already supplied) IF his PC isn't close enough to the master socket to connect the PC to the router by ethernet.
I suggest we all stop trying to solve a problem which we don't really yet know enough detail about, until the OP provides more specifics. We need to know:
Is the broadband cable or ADSL (phone line)?
Make and model of wireless router?
Location of PC and router (can they use a wired connection)?
Does the PC have an ethernet port? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Ok. So can you plug an ethernet cable from the PC to the router and plug the router into the phoneline? If so, then switch on the router, wait a few minutes and open up a browser window (Internet Explorer or Firefox).
Type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, hit return and that should take you into a setup screen.
