Spot on jay. However, Universe B sounds rather dull, and certainly bereft of the qualities which cause our species to operate in the half-assed way that it does, don't you think?

Maybe its a chicken and egg situation. If we describe the house price boom as the egg, then did the useless stupid chicken come first or as a result of.

    Imagine two parallel universes:

    Universe A
People tune in to Locationx3, Homes under the hammer, Prop ladder etc and see ordinary people making vast amounts of money for little work.

    Universe B
    No such shows exist.

Which is gonna have the biggest amateur BTL sector? Which is gonna have the greater speculative property bubble? Which is gonna have the most FTBs over-stretching themselves, "in order to get a foot on the ladder"? Which is gonna have the most amateur BTLers entering at the peak of the market and ruining themselves and their families? Which is gonna have the most repossessions?

It's not the only factor responsible for the speculative mania, it's not even a particularly important factor. But it will have had some impact.

    Very true.

My argument stems from, that most people within this thread feel that these programmes had a significant impact.

It's a fair point but as most or all of these programs are on commercial TV stations, the programs only exists to deliver viewers to advertisers. There is plenty of choice these days and nobody is forced to watch.

People overextended themselves in the late 80s without Krusty telling them to!

Actually Channel 4, the main purveyor of property !!!!!!, has a public service remit.
  • They need to give a fsa warning on the title screen on every advert break tbh
Mortgages are medium to long-term investments. Your house value can go down as well as up so there is a possibility that you might not get back the amount originally invested.
