I think this would be less daunting than the one mentioned in the MSE Arms. I am not a newbie but have only made a couple of visits to the Arms and am not yet comfortable there. I can imagine a lot of newbies would not wish to join in something that was associated with this area of MSE. No intention of causing offence, it is just I find all the colourful characters visiting the Arms a bit overwhelming.

henersonb is in chat with me now (hope you don't mind me saying that )and I don't think I've scared the life out of him yet ,no offence taken :snow_grin

I think you would have to use something like vbchat that's integrated into the forum so that people would be using the same usernames.

Anything else and you would have people impersonating each other all over the place.

It might be better if there was an un-official one.

I've seen plenty of free chat systems but they don't put moderation or control high on their list of features.
  • Am I understanding this correctly? What would a chat room be like with 200+ and counting people in it?

that big then you'd have to have seperate rooms

    = seperate moderaors??

I don't even know how you'd moderate a chat room

Previous thread - including Martins response - is here

    :)
  • Thanks SRA,I've just read all the posts in the thread and they read like the tower of Babel ;) I imagine any chat room would be similar multiplied by a factor of several magnitudes. However, if there's a need for a chat room then I'm sure someone somewhere will set one up and the lovely MSE team might post a link to it. With the usual disclaimers :)

In other words - MSE'ers needn't rely on Martin and the team to do everything for them, you can be  and get off your backside and DIY if the need is there

For those of you on Firefox, the yakalike extension looks great.

The idea is that you can chat to people who are viewing the same site as you and also have the extension

Unfortunately it was featured on Digg.com yesterday and they overloaded it so it's not open to new registrations right now
