Hi Martin & Follow Members
I think its time we moved forward and had live chat rooms covered by Administrators with backup members. This site is the dogs bol@@@s but we need not rest on our laurels.
This helps people to pop in get uptodate info they need urgently the problem with forums it can take days for people to reply and even if experts are online they cannot monitor every channel. Also Martin could do monthly surgeries at special times.
Anybody think its a good idea?
Cheers Thorrrr

Way back when...... I did set up a Yahoo Group which included live chat, it did go down very well. But I think something more substantial would be required today with the current level of members.
I do agree with this and would be happy to assist with it's moderation.0 -
Yep sound good to me, though not the singing idea0

Part of the reason I'm such a fan of forums is because 99% of chat sites I've seen have far too many idiots about. This is harder to reproduce in a forum because the rules are easier to enforce.
We've seen spammers in the forums. This is easy to deal with under the current set up. The spam is reported, and AbCon deals with it in due course. How would this be dealt with if a new member signs up and posts a spam link every 15 seconds (live spam). This would look offputting and would be extremely annoying. It would also make it difficult to make any sense of the line of chat bcause they would be broken up by the spam posts.
Have moderators a few may say. This is fine, but if they are employed moderators, how many extra people is this going to take to be able to cover the chat rooms 24/7. This could cost a massive amount extra for a not very big add on feature to the site. But we would volounteer....As I'm sure some others would say. This would still require a lot of organising to make sure that the chat room is covered 24/7. On nice days like we've been having what if all the volounteers decide to have a day out, or they have an appointment. It would need rotas that people stick to. Once again this is a lot of work for not a lot of extra gain.
I don't know why there is this call to move forward. This site is already going from strength to strength. It is getting more popular by the week. If it's so far behind the times why is it growing like this? Maybe this is because Martin and the team have already put together a winning formula. If it aint broke, why try to fix it?
I don't think there is a need for a chat room to be able to get advice immediately. This already happens. What if someone came and asked a question that nobody in the chat room knew the answer to? They would still have to post as normal and wait for the answer. This is where a forum is so much more useful to get information than a chat room.
Anyway........As you can probably guess. I think this is a really bad idea. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I agree with Rex Mundi. There was a need to delete a thread in The Arms yesterday evening. I am concerned that bad behaviour would escalate if a live chat room was available.
I don't agree with the comment that questions go unanswered for a long time. Take a look at the number of members logged in during the early hours every night / morning (some don't need sleep;) )..........there is always someone around and most members on this site want to help others and post money saving tips.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. A chat room would change the site beyond recognition. It isn't broke and doesn't need fixing. I like it just as it is.

There was a chat room once or twice for a money saving quiz, I remember because I won the first time.
This was before most chat rooms were shut down, the sheer volume of members now I suspect would make it like when for example Channel 4 do live web chats, most people can't get in & then you read a tiny transcript later of some of what was asked/said, I am not sure much could be gained from it, although I'd think another quiz night was a great idea I'm sure Andrea has loads of time to make up some questions
