I say keep it as is! This site is brilliant and the warmth and compassion with which people are treated contrasts with "chat sites". The format does allow for heated discussion but each post needs to add something to the debate. In chat rooms people just use obscenties at each other and do not really discuss anything.
Also, this site provides and archive of all the discussions that have taken place.

In answer to the chat room element of OP, its far too complicated to have live chat on very relevant money topics. The amount of information needed to 'diagnose' the problem would ensure the chat was a one to one, therefore not a room. That makes the posting forum head and shoulders above chat, all written down in details gives the poster and reader chance to scan the information and add or take away without loss of momentum. A monthly clinic is an idea that perhaps can be looked into like the one that was held on plumbing, it needs encouraging!Panda xx

I am intrigued by the idea of a 'live chat' function on here and have read through most of the posts on this thread. One thing I don't understand is the almost fanatical rejection of the idea. Why?
Chat rooms don't have to be topic specific, they can just be a place for likeminded individuals to come together and chew the fat (we don't have to be saving cash 24/7 you know). Earlier this evening I posted in the MSA about the B52's and over the course of an hour or so I had 20 odd replies, in a chat room the conversation would have been done and dusted within 5 minutes.
I know people will fret about idiots coming into the room to spout obscenities and general hatred, but surely we are adults and could have access to an ignore button, and even better we could have an IRC type option wher certain trusted users would have the ability to kick/ban users for being obnoxious? Afterall, every ISP I know of has chat rooms, some have the ability to filter foul language, some don't, but there is always the 'report' option and coupled wih an IP logged account it wouldn't be that hard to ban persistent offenders, would it?FB :heartpuls Wiggly
