I can't believe you are spouting this rubish.
The price of energy has fallen everywhere except in European/UK gas.
There has been criticism of gas prices from all quarters including Energy watch,
yet you persist in pretending everything is fine and there is no profiteering going on.

We all know vast profits are being made whilst people freeze.
The regulator of course did not investigate the wholesale market where the real
cartel exists. Many of the retailers make up that cartel.

The SFO are about as useless as the agency supposed to protect Baby P.

Reactor, just because you have been really nice and given me well justified thanks for my post;) I will reply.

Now I know you have difficulty in reading(and understanding!) posts before the 'red mist' descends and I am sure that you think Baby P's sad fate is relevant to a thread on gas and electricity prices.

However when you have calmed down from your spluttering indignation, could you please take some time to read my post again. - Perhaps even consult your friends esbo and iamesbo.

When you have read the post, and understood the post - I mean really understood the post - you will see it is about a Cartel - which is illegal

Nobody, as far as I can see, said everything is fine! said anything about profits!

Also you very clearly have not read or, as usual, not understood, the Regulator's report.

Futhermore this whole switching idea is a big con because as I understand it the gas companies pay the switching sites when you switch via them, however of course they are payinig them with *our* money.

The result is the more people switch the higher your bills will be!!

I'm surprised Ofgem didn't spot this obvious flaw

My goodness a first - I agree with your sentiments in the first sentence - several threads about this(search for 'parasitic' in MSE)

I just dont buy that arguement, if all comparison sites stopped operating prices wouldnt go down, the energy companies would spend all that money on advertising instead, TV ads, Spam, Everything around you being "Sponsored by E-on/Npower/EDF/BG/SP" etc etc

The last thing you will see is prices going down.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

I understand they get £30? every time you switch?
That's a decent chunk of my bill.

We don't need all these fancy traiffs which just serve to confuse us, we had a great
system before, a standing charge and a price for gas/electricity.

We already have tons of advertising with the current system and tons of sponsership eg NPower Test matches. Eon spoonser the FA Cup etc....So I am not sure what you are talking about, they already spend fortune on sponsership.

And they would spend a hell of a lot more if they stopped paying comparison sites, they wouldnt put prices down.

I do agree that it should be a lot simpler with one tariff etc. but thats not likely to happen either unless the "government" step in (again unlikely)

  • Cashback expenditure will, I'm sure, be classed as advertising/promotion and hence be tax-deductible. But I'm not an accountant (my maths aint good enough!). I agree with plushchris, there's no way they would reduce prices if they stopped paying cashback...

Why doesn't Mr Brown put pressure on the gas and electric companies to reduce their prices? More people are affected by high energy costs than mortgage rates.
