Grrr - blue badge

  • Hi,

Newbie but longtime lurker here, recently severely disabled and still trying to get my head around the whole blue badge thing.

I noticed at my local shop the other day a notice displayed saying that due to the abuse of the blue badges and disabled spaces, with effect from the 1st January 2009 only those vehicles displaying a disabled tax disc will be able to park in the disabled bays.

I asked at customer services what would happen if I such as my daughter fetched me in her car without a disabled tax disc and was told it is okay to drop off disabled people in the drop off point right in front of the store then for her to drive to a 'normal' space which seems fair enough I suppose. Same in reverse for collecting disabled folks.

I just hope they do enforce the new rules though as upto now the disabled spaces seem to have been a free for all for everyone with the able bodied taking up nearly all of the disabled spaces with not a blue badge in sight.

But what if the disabled passenger needed help to get out of the car, or were unable to be left alone while the driver parked the car?

I know that if we left my Nana then went to park the car, chances are she wouldn't be there when we got back. She would of wondered off and depending on her frame of mind would be telling people we had abandond her!
  • Isn't there a misunderstanding here? The Blue Badge belongs to the disabled person, not the car.

What if I go shopping in my friends car, he parks in a disabled bay and we use my blue badge...?

And how do they know people are 'abusing the disabled bays'? If people are parking there without blue badges; tow them, if they're parking there with blue badges; give them the benefit of the doubt.

Are they allowed to do this?
  • It seems a similar to the car parks where I live where only cars with disabled tax discs park for free. If you only have a blue badge and normal tax badge you have to pay. It means disabled people in relatives cars etc have to pay.

    Tally
  • at the end of the day it,s simple some people will always take the pi$$ so until supermarkets and the like start issuing fines nation wide they always will . this is just my take on things not saying it,s the right way but it would be a start.

The other side of the coin is that I'd be grateful if someone politely pointed out that I'd forgotten to put my Blue Badge out.

I'm so foggy-minded at times that one of these days I am going to forget.

Me too - I got fined once for forgetting to put my blue badge on the dash - and even when I explained I have short-term memory problems and pointed out that my tax disc clearly shows the car is registered to a disabled person and exempt from road tax, they refused to cancel the fine. So yes... any time you see me hobbling away from the car without putting my blue badge out, please feel free to call me back (nicely....) !

issuing fines in a supermarket car park is useless , unless it is council run, because they are unenforceable.

Now clamping notices might just swing it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
