Own food banned on Ryanair: is this for real?

A rumour that I have heard: if you want to eat on a Ryanair flight, you have to buy the food from them. Apparently a woman started to open her lunch box, and an announcement came over the loudspeakers stating that only food and drink that they sold could be consumed on board.
Has anyone here heard or experienced anything similar? And do they have the legal right to stop you quietly eating your own sandwiches?

Passengers are welcome to bring their own food on board, however, in the interest of safety passengers are prohibited from carrying hot drinks on board.
Sounds like an anti-ryanair myth to be honest.
You can't consume your own alcohol onboard though.0 -
What are they going to do at 30,000 feet, kick you off? Take plenty of food and enjoy the flight in style.0

hot drinks i can understand- health and safety issue..
though aren't any liquids (over 100ml?) be banned, for security reasons? (though surprisinglt that doesnt apply to the duty free they sell you onbaord?)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -

Don't even get me started on that issue. Completely over the top and unnecessary regulations that do nothing but inconvenience and empty the wallets of passengers. Anyone noticed tiny shampoo (etc) bottles for sale in supermarkets, only slightly cheaper than the full size bottles? Nice to see they're cashing in on it.
You can buy liquids after security , if you need to . Unless you are travelling without a case you are free to pack any amount of shampoo you want0 -

It is a fact. After you go through security you can put any amount of liquids in your hand luggage. That's where Boots and duty free is!!
Indeed. I suppose the justification is that Boots (etc) monitor their stock deliveries very closely, to ensure, without doubt, that no "unwanted" liquids creep in by acquaintances of terrorist passengers.
It'd be interesting to know just how closely monitored their deliveries are.0
