Because it wasn't at risk!!!! These data should not have been released. They are private data that nobody could reasonably expected to have released.

If you are a policeman, you know that membership of the BNP is not OK.

So you are just hoping you don't get found out.

When I have a smear, I'm not remotely ashamed of it, or fear that fact being found out to my detriment.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

It is a waste of time and energy to fight for the freedom of sppech for those who oppose it.

I assume by this you mean that you should be for banned from posting further in this thread.

99% of these people are not policemen.

In other words nobody should be allowed to have views that other people might disagree with unless they are prepared to openly advertise that they hold them????

So if you have converted from Islam to Christianity, you should wear a banner on your back saying 'I am an apostate'? [Something which will result in your death in many countries.]

I don't quite understand all the people that think that people's political views should have to be subjected to the approval of others.

We do have a secret ballot for precisely this reason, god knows why the police think it's ok to abuse data in this way. Clearly we are not as a free or democratic as we used to be.

As for people whose contracts of employment state that they will not a political party, if it is found out that they have done so, then they are in breach of contract and should be sacked. No question, no sympathy!

That depends on how that is found out. If someone is found chairing the local Conservative Assocation meeting than that would seem reasonable. But this data is not admissible for anything.

    Sorry.

This isn't data that has anything to do with ballots, secret or otherwise. It's about fully-paid-up, card-carrying members of the BNP.

Just as those people are entitled to hold political views, I'm entitled to think they are racist, bigoted scum.

    Card-carrying?

Don't you think that's a little dramatic? Not all of these people are boot-wearing skinheads..

Firstly the list is not a membership list. It includes people who simply were foolish enough to go along to meetings.

And in any case, not everybody knows that Nick Griffin is a Nazi. They might have fallen for their wheedling propaganda on one of their TV broadcasts, and joined for that reason without knowing the full facts. Not everybody is as clued-up as you.
Just as those people are entitled to hold political views, I'm entitled to think they are racist, bigoted scum.

But you are not entitled to, because you shouldn't have their personal data.
  • I don't have their data, though. That is my general view of BNP members. I don't have the list.

    >How can you make it illegal to be a BNP member when it's impossible to prove if somebody is one?<

There's been a lot of "research" using MRI brain scanners which claim to prove if people are racist despite any racist behaviour. Show some pictures of people of colour etc., read the brainwaves and, bingo, a "doctor" will testify you're a racist. It's science, no defence is possible, call for the tumbrils.

The thing that surprises me is that the police didn't have a list of BNP members before it was leaked.

    Really? How nuts.
FWIW there are a few animal behaviour studies suggesting racism might be evident in some spcis of 'animals other than us' however, I do not plan on checking with my pets the next time we acquire something of a differnt colour, they will be expected to get past any bigotry they might hold and get on with it.
