At least in Asda I get the choice whether to use the automated fast track checkout or to be dealt with by someone living and breathing.0

And you do at the moment. Just I also hate it when people use the automated fast track with a trolley full. As people also hate you for using the cashiers rather than machines, when cashiers could quite easily be helping someone who actually needs to see them (i.e. can't go anywhere else).0 -
Please explain what you mean by 'cant go anywhere else'.0

I just want to rant really !!!!
Does anybody know how it was decided that if you had a direct debit coming from your account that the money had to be in day the before? as the banking day starts at midnight and if your money isnt in there and then they wont pay it. I always thought that the banking day would include that actual day if you get where I'm coming from. I used to work for RBS and the tellers used to get a report to go through late on in the afternoon to see if customers had lodged money. They then used to pay the dd if the funds were there. They dont do this anymore suprise surprise. Another money making scheme if you ask me.
Bringing the thread back on track.....As far as i know, the actual day is day 1, like it is for BACS payments if you know what i mean....

I think he means stuff that needs to be done with someone sitting in front of you, like lending, international payments, account openings, account queries etc.
I'll say it again though; nice smile or not, it's insane to waste 5 or 10 minutes of your time in a queue to pay in a cheque or get money out or something when you could use a machine in a few seconds and be done, and I really, really can't see the point in wasting your time just so you get a few warm fuzzies and feel important because you're getting "service".0 -

Cashiers can be retrained, or set to work on reception duties greeting customers and helping people use the machines, and indeed sometimes have to maintain the machines and process the deposits put into them.0 -
I always though you needed the money in the day before to enable a DD to go out -
I always use the machines if I can - the ones in HSBC Staines give you a nice photocopy of the chqs you bank along with your banking slip.
Its so much more efficient then in the 1970s when there were barely any cash machines and the banks were open 9.30-3.30 - mind you when I worked at Barclays in 1974 in a sub branch we were out the door at 4pm providing the tills balanced - any cashier who couldn't balance was likely to feel many sets of eyes boring into their back!!!0 -
Exactly. I wouldnt go into the bank looking for the cashier if I wanted a new account, foreign exchange, or a loan.
The cashier showed me how to use the relevent machine for my transaction.
I now know what to do in future.
There is now therefore, a reduced need for a cashier position in that bank.0
