ginnyknit - do you make your own tomato passata to store in jars? If so, could you provide the method please. I've got about 30 tomato plants growing in the garden and we normally make & freeze a lot of tomato purree for pasta but my freezer is still very full and I need to find another way of storing my surplus tomatoes. How long does bottled tomato passata store for?

    Hi everyone! :hello:

I am not sure where the thread went on monitoring supermarket price hikes - the one which was going to be called "Supermarket Snitches" maybe? I think I read last week that it was merged with something else, but I couldn't find it. Anyhoo, I just wanted to report that in my latest undercover (I went with my duvet over my head...) to $ain$burys I discovered that their Ba$ics ham had gone up by 2p from last week to £1.40. I was rather cross and ranted about it for rather a long time (much to the embarrassment of hubby :rotfl:)

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know (if you didn't already) and also just to have another little  about it!

    Jo :) /

Also the larger pack of 30 slices cost more than 3 packs of 10 slices, which were 42p ea when I bought them. Now it might be a weight thing but its slices I use in wraps and sarnies not a weight.

I slow fry cooked onions then add the toms and salt. When they are done I zuzz them and fill sterilized jars with new lids ( lakeland 2.29 for 12) then cover the jars with a towel and leave to cool. Or you can just freeze it as easily if you have the room.

Thanks for the tip off, Primrose, tinned tomatoes are a permanent resident in my store cupboard - I have noticed the price of them creep up over the past year or so, particularly the value/basics brands. Perhaps we all ought to try and grow as many tomato plants as possible and hopefully have a glut of tomatoes to turn into sauce for the freezer!

Oh dear....I use a lot of tinned tomatoes too:(. Just as well I've got 3 times as many tomato plants as previous years busily growing away out in the garden and some recipes somewhere for bottling tomatoes. As a vegetarian I DO use one heck of a lot of tomatoes as part of the way I flavour my food - canned tomatoes, tomato puree, etc.

So - what does everyone else use tinned tomatoes/tomato puree for? MIne are used in things like pasta sauces and I like to do the occasional fried eggs with some tomato puree squeezed round the edges of them in the frying pan.

I went to Mr M today, I don't know about things going up in price because I've only just started shopping there, but I got quite cross because a lot of items didn't have a price showing at all.... there I was, wandering round with my calculator and I couldn't enter the price of my cucumber... very annoying! It wasn't just the cucumber, there were yogurts and cheeses with no proce on either. I was sneezing at the time so couldn't face complaining, but I thought it was pretty poor.

I use tinned toms/ passata in just about every pasta sause I make, anything with mince in, and soup. It sometimes gets to the point where I have to make a conscious effort to have a couple of non-tomato based meals a week, just to break up the routine a bit!
