I've been reading in today's paper that the price of tinned tomatoes is set to rocket because of shortages. Apparently last year's cold wet winter led to three million fewer tomatoes being grown for processing this year. Also last year's record harvest caused a 15% drop in wholesale prices and has deterred many Italian farmers from growing them again this year. (Most tinned tomatoes come from Italy). The rising price of steel needed for the tins will also be contributing to the price rise. Heavy tinned tomato users may want to start stocking up now. and users of other tinned goods can also expect to see price rises soon.
Thanks for that Primrose I use 6 tins a month at the very least - will be buying some every time I go out now :TAug11 £193.29/£240

Hi everyone! :hello:
I am not sure where the thread went on monitoring supermarket price hikes - the one which was going to be called "Supermarket Snitches" maybe? I think I read last week that it was merged with something else, but I couldn't find it. Anyhoo, I just wanted to report that in my latest undercover (I went with my duvet over my head...) to $ain$burys I discovered that their Ba$ics ham had gone up by 2p from last week to £1.40. I was rather cross and ranted about it for rather a long time (much to the embarrassment of hubby :rotfl:)
Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know (if you didn't already) and also just to have another little  about it!
Jo/
It was moved and merged in with a thread in the Food Shopping & Groceries section entitled Discussion Thread On Supermarket Prices - are they becoming to high? - and promptly died
Given that that wasn't the topic of our original thread which was about basics/value and smart price ranges possibly being phased out across the country.....shame, as it would have been interesting.
Anyways - I've monitored it for a week, and my local Tescos are no longer selling loose common garden tomatoes or bramley cooking apples.
Both now have to be purchased in packs of 6 and 5 respectively. There are no spaces and no 'sorry we are temporarily out of stock' stickers, which makes me wonder if this will be happening across the board with all with fruit and veg .....it's a way to make us buy moreAug11 £193.29/£240

I went to Asda Saturday morning and there were no sp tinned toms at all. No space either. Instead there was a "special offer" on some other sort (forgot) 2 for £1. Promptly spit dummy out and didn't buy any. Maybe I should have.0

Asda's smart price sliced corned beef has gone up this last week from 97p to £1.07,
The price increases are so noticable, it isn't a penny here or there but more than 10/15p on every item, it soon adds up.0 -
Don't know if it helps but Sainsbug's basics tomatoes are packed in tetrapack so might not be as affected by price rises in cans - she says hopefully. On the other hand I'm sure all the supermarkets will slap a price rise on if they can“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I found this link on the bbc website. It's a diy 'what would you cut in the budget' tool. It makes sobering reading - something has to give and it's the poorest who are going to pay the price.
Note there's no mention of taxing the bankers ....
Here's the link, if you're interested:

Also, if anyone's interested, there are national demonstrations going on up and down the country today, organised by 'right to work'. Not sure yet if I'll go to the one here.

A few NSD's for me, have been busy planning and job hunting.
I have come to the conclusion that 10-12 babygrows, the same amount of vests and 3 nice outfits in each size (nb, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9) will be more than ample for the first 6 months or so. I use tights on boys in winter so add 4 pairs.
Might go boots tomorrow, when i was pg with my ds they forever had reduced babygrows for £2 a pack0
